Grading S -Log in Davicini

I understood lower entire image using offset. I was asking why I need to know mid gray if I lower entire image anyway? I have macgregor LUT but he post more than one. I think 3. Which one is the right one? Or any of the 3? I think one is cineon though.

Grey is usually easy reference, skin, pavement, etc.. but you can use any midtone right up to something with 90% white reflectance. I just think mid tone safest.

For Mac LUT take slog to cineon. Then apply any ARRI LUT. Works great.

And what reason slog 2 is same curve as slog but 1 stop brighter? Sony say the reason for slog 2?

Probably to match performance of newer sensors and additionally gain 1 stop latitude in highlights. I really don't know.

Hey thank you. So this is accurate? After using this I can use all slog2 luts? Use this in node or as input lut in settings?

It's mathematically accurate so really yes it should work.

Put this on your first node, then on second node add your slog2 film or whatever LUT and see what happens.

you can add this slog1->slog2 LUT under input settings to apply it too all your clips but you will lose the ability to adjust any exposure BEFORE the gamma conversion.

I tested the slog1->slog2 LUT on some footage I had and then applied some slog2 LUTs and it looked fine. worked good.

Have you tried any of this yet, and how were you results?

I tried it. It look like it works. 709A now looks more normal. But this is an ugly lut. But I don't have other slog2 luts besides the sony ones.

709A is ugly, but you can use it as a base and tweak it. Lower the blacks, and play with blue channel in midtones a little.

When I first got my F55 there was a F65 slog2 beta LUT that I must have used for over a year that I kind of liked. (well there was nothing else at the time). You can find it on my LUTS page. Just be careful not all the LUTs there are for slog2. I think I had created two other slog2 LUTS you can download and try. STARCENTRAL 001 and 002 for slog2, and I think there is a cross process LUT for slog2.

Generally I am of the opinion now that you should not use LUTS to create a look or to de-log footage. The exception to my "rule" are if using film emulation LUTS because they would be impossible for the average user to try and create from scratch.

The film emulation LUTS built into Davinci Resolve however are for cineon based curves such as ARRI's Log or Sony's S-Log3 so if you want to use those you need MacGregor's slog1->cineon LUT, then you can apply a film emulation LUT.

Footage from F35 is very easy to grade.

Don't use log wheels just use primary wheels. Pull gamma down, then raise gain wheel, then use lift to bring blacks to nominal position. Boost saturation to 65-85 range.

Next balance the color of the blacks so they are even on the bottom using the lift wheel. Now do the same for the highlights (make them even so highlights are actually "white" as they should be).

Now tell me how this makes your image look? You don't need LUT. You are pro colorist now.
