Grading S -Log in Davicini

Please excuse my new bee question I am about to post. I have a Sony f35 for a couple of days and after shooting some tests I tried to grade them. I set the camera to S log to be able to grade them in post. When i open up the clips in resolve and apply a LUT the image blows out extremely. It reminds me of times i graded red footage and forgot to set the clips to red-log. In resolve it doesn't seem to give you an option on choosing log files. What step am i missing?

In Resolve you need to right click on the clip in the media pool, go to clip attributes and select data levels. If you're using LUTs, make sure you're using the original S-Log lut and not S-Log2 or S-Log3, and that your color space is set to Rec709.

If you don't have any LUTs for slog1 (the original slog) you can try this one for now, it was created using Ben's calculator. It goes from slog to LC709A. LC709A is a LUT made by Sony to give you colour similar to the ARRI Alexa. http://www.starcentral.ca/forums/LUTs/f35-slog-to-lc709A.cube

In fact if you can find any LUTS for the Sony F3, it will also work for the F35 because both use the original slog.

This thread might help you out as well, http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?323095-Sony-F3-Resurrection-The-New-Chapter

This big dilema. Some say put LUT first and then grade others say grade and put LUT last. What is the correct?

What would be the particular issues with using slog2 LUTs on slog footage? I know slog3 was more significantly different than slog2, but I thought slog2/slog were at least kinda similar.

As I'm wondering for how simplistic it would be in the future to be matching FS700/A7s/A6300/RX10/RX100/etc slog2 footage with an F3/F35

Yes slog1 and 2 are identical curves, only different by one stop. You can create a first node to adjust for exposure and then on your second node place the slog2 LUT.

I would grade after the LUT not before. But, I will put a correction node before the LUT to adjust for exposure and sometimes even white balance.

This opens many slog2 LUT to use with F35. You mean slog2 is 1 stop above or bellow slog? What is 1 stop in IRE?

Slog has middle grey at 38%, slog2 has middle grey at 32%.

Best thing is to lower F35 exposure using offset wheel and then on second node try the LUT.

Thing is you don't want to feed a LUT any clipped values so when you lower offset I'd pay attention to the black part of signal and if necessary use some lift to bring it up.

Bens LUTCALC tool might be better way to convert slog2 LUT to slog1 LUT.

I have never tried this but might test it out later.

So I must have gray card in shot to make sure I have 38% gray reference? So I know to low this to 32%. Or I didn't understand right? Hard to have gray card in every shot.

just pick something around middle grey in your shot and lower 6% IRE. That should be easy.

Better yet is to make a 3D LUT that takes slog1 to slog2 using Ben's LUT Calc tool. Or go for MacGregor's LUTs so you end up with a gamma curve you can throw any ARRI Log LUTs on top... much more support for this than Sony slog.

I have to lower overall right not only mids? Then if I know I must always lower 6% does it matter if the reference is mid gray or not? I just lower the whole thing 6%. Or? Why I need to find mid gray to lower? And what macgregor LUT you mean?

for MacGregor's LUT you'll have to look through the 285+ page thread.. I have no idea where it is in there. Sorry. Maybe someone else can post a direct

Here's a graph of slog1 versus slog2. You can see they are identical. Just lower your entire image using offset, I already mentioned that. But look at the bottom and what will happen if you lower it, you might end up clipping black. So use your waveform monitor to monitor your changes, and if necessary bring the blacks back up.

If this is too hard, then just use Ben's LUT calc tool to make a LUT that will handle everything for you. It is easy program to use.

I understood lower entire image using offset. I was asking why I need to know mid gray if I lower entire image anyway? I have macgregor LUT but he post more than one. I think 3. Which one is the right one? Or any of the 3? I think one is cineon though.

And what reason slog 2 is same curve as slog but 1 stop brighter? Sony say the reason for slog 2?
