Grabs From My WWII Short

Grabs from my latest project. Just a fun short to get the juices flowing (and give the actors an excuse to play soldier for a day). Before showing it publicly I went ahead and gave the Amazon contest a shot. Once the competition is over I can post the vid (you will only be able to screen it at random during the competition). Until then -- grabs.

DVX-100, Panasonic 16x9 Adapter, cc with Avid and then with MB

Details details. ;) It's called "Battaglia" ...it's based on a Sept. 28 1944 surprise attack by the Germans on Mount Battaglia in Italy. The actual story-line in the short is pure fiction that is set in the middle of the historic event.

You've got the visuals down! great job. Now if the sound design matches that will be one killer short! (Literally and figuratively!) (Pun was not originally intended.)

Yeah the sound design will be killer. I got some great stuff with the on-board mic!

Just kidding -- but yes, I need to allocate quite a bit of time for the final sound mix on this one.

I would like to see this when it is in the can as I love WWII stuff, but I don't know if I completely buy soldiers out in the woods with spotless, clean, uniforms (Whether they recently set up camp or not) unadorned with any personal effects, i.e. pack of Lucky Strikes rolled up in a t-shirt sleeve, small cut out magazine photo of a pin-up girl taped to a helmet, etc..
Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket is an excellent example of costuming (and casting). Half of those guys didn't even have to open their mouths as you saw their personalities by their "look"
I know Vietnam wasn't WWII and the soldiers, I'm sure, had different mind sets about dress code, but, it just heightens the realism when texture like this is added.
I'm not talking about them rolling in mud, just... something.
Just an observation. Everything else looks sweet!

PANA-MAN nearly hit it on the head. These shots look pretty good, and I'm already pretty impressed with the effort, but something was just nagging me as "wrong". And then I figured it out: none of them have any decor! No rank, insignia, nameplates, etc. That's what's missing... sadly it screams out at you once you notice it.

On the other hand I totally understand that it looks like you've already gone further than most war productions that aren't big studio pieces. Hopefully it finishes well!

They all, um, got their decor stolen by Nazis, yeah, that's it.

Actually, some of the guys out there are WWII re-enactors, so they did bring out Lucky Strikes, period rations, etc etc.

Your observations are right on the money -- a commodity which was unfortunately lacking for this production. However, the lack of those authentic touches is more glaring in the grabs than in the actual footage since everything is fast paced and there's not much time to stop and think (the whole sequence is only about 3 minutes long). I did get rank insignia on the Captain (you can barely see it in the grab where he's holding out his hand to stop the truck), but no one else. Maybe I can pick up a few bonus points for actual M1 Garands and a BAR, no?!

This still looks fun and I look forward to it but it shows how far one must really go into production detail

Owen I am not at all comparing your short DVX Film to the MULTI GAZILLON budgeted Band of Brothers! Just illustrating some finer details for the next go around.

Little thigns like a Grenade hanging on a clip, Some shreds hanging on the helmets, battalion patches and insiginia, unshaven depending on campaign and story, cigarettes or cigars or packs, Spade on helmet or other insigina, gear packs, back packs, ammo belts and ofcourse some dirt and grime! I know, these RE-Enactors dont want to mess up the uniforms!

Again, Im totally into what you are making and cannot wait to see it. I want to do a short Vietnam or WW2 one before I bail San Diego (chosen Location) so I appreciate your efforts on this! And that JEEP! Wow!

Yeah... You get points in may book for just trying such an ambitious project. Would love to see it. I did something similar a few years back, that soon grew to half an hour. I had the same problems with uniforms and not being able to afford duplicates etc. I did find weapons were quite easy to come by...even in England!

Please let us know if you can post it!
