Grabs before/after color correction...

I shot some 24p footage today and decided to do some color correcting. Here are the before/after pictures. I'd love to hear some feedback on anything I've done wrong since I haven't done much color correcting before.

Looks pretty good! I am also an amateur colorist(is that the right word?) what did you do in post to give it that sharper and more vivid look?

Here's the settings I changed.

Under Color Corrector I changed Offset to -9.5.

Under Levels I changed Input Start to 0.050.

Under HSL Adjust I changed Saturation to 1.20.

Hope this helps.

this is really good, Gary! You should be proud. Some people get a little too crazy with CC sometimes. Sure, it usually fits a certain mood, but what if you just want to accent the image and make it more beautiful? Subtlety! You just need to make small alterations to make things pop better.

You definately did this by deepening the colors, especially the greens. The images look much less washed out than before and more vibrant, which is good (unless you WANT washed out, colorless footage. which is definately fine as well).

really, it's all up to you and what your need for CC is. But if you just wanted to make the image look better, you succeeded. :)

Thanks for the kind words Lawsuit Boy. You're totally right. I did exactly what I set out to do. Make the images more vibrant as they were way too washed out.

Now here's a question for you (or anyone really)... Why were my colors so washed out in the first place? I don't recall it looking like that when I was shooting it. Thanks!

Not bad. The only thing that really strikes me is the skin tone on the second image. The tonality seems compressed a bit and the color a bit red.

well they're not to a certain extent. the video you've recorded hits the CCDs at 4:4:4, but then gets compressed to a color space of 4:1:1 and that's where it becomes a bit darker or greyed. however it's always good to have an external monitor hooked up so that you can see how far you should saturate or deepen the colors. before i had calibrated my monitors i found out while watching one of my DVDs that i had gone a little overboard.

Nicely done! What program are you using to set those? I looked around in Adobe Premiere Pro 2 but couldn't find those settings.
Hmm..

I know you didn't ask for it, but here's my attempt at correcting the second image.

I thought your color correction was better, Bully. :) The flesh tones, in particular, look more accurate. What program were you using?

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks Rszebras. I used After Effects with the following done to the image...

Auto Color (Left Default)
Auto Contrast (Left Default)
Auto Levels (Left Default)
Hue/Saturation (On the Red Channel I bumped the Hue to +6)

See, that's cool. They have those in PPro 2 and I fool around with them but rarely use them. I might have to start using them a bit more. I just feel like I'm cheating if it's that easy.
:-)

I fooled around in Premiere with a few different elements and this is what I got:

MatthewC, good Idea with the Brightness/Contrast. I added that to my correction. It helps the image out a lot. The only problem is that white shirt he's wearing. It's a bit blown out.

the_bully: He looks a bit sick in that last picture. :)

I do agree though, the skin tone in mine doesn't look that great. I'll have to keep practicing with it.

As for which one is me... I'm the goofy looking one (i.e., I'm not the guy in the white shirt.

Yeah, that was the major problem I saw in that picture, but figure'd I'd post it anyways. It taught me to remind my actors not to wear too bright clothes.
I think I like fooling with the brightness/contrast and the saturation the best, I think they have the biggest impact.
