Grabbing/Monitoring Ambient Sound: Zoom H1 Plus Sescom Cable?

I'd looking for a way to up the quality of run-and-gun sound I get from the GH2 - for about $150.

The solution I'm looking at is mounting a Zoom H1 on the hot shoe, and using a Sescom Y-adaptor cable to: 1) route the sound into the GH2 (audio level at 3?), and 2)monitor the sound, at least as the Zoom is recording it. I'm aware that there's no way at this point to monitor the sound being recorded in the GH2 itself.

Actually post-syncing the sound recorded by the H1 would be optional.

This seems a better alternative than using the Panasonic DMW MS1 or other mini-plug mike (eg Rode Video Mike) with no monitoring at all.

Note that I'm not looking for pristine audio. Just better ambience that I get from the built-in mike.

Thoughts, opinions, experience?

Thanks.

That's what I do with an H4n. This is the cable:

Works great. The H4n produces very good sound quality. I can't for the H1, though. Audio records onto video file from the recorder. You can have your levels on the screen to make sure that it's getting to the camera. But if it's an important interview or something that couldn't be redone in case something messed up, I would also record to SD card on the audio recorder-- just in case.

Oh, and you'll also need to buy a shoe adapter to place the recorder on top. The H4n has a thread on bottom-- I don't know whether the H1 does or not.

The H1 does have a tripod thread on the back BUT it is PLASTIC so can be stripped easily.
