GH4 Grab a cuppa...Nick Driftwood's Back!

Where's the moire in the 1080p96 clips? There's an awful lot of woven fabric slowly passing through the focal point toward the very sharp Panny 35-100, and I can only imagine a hint of it. The slo mo footage on my 24" FHD monitor looks sharper than any I can recall, without over-sharpening artifacts to my admittedly elderly eyes.

Could his upscaling it to 4K do this??

Nick said he used FXFactory Pro "Sharpen Luminance" as his sharpening plugin.
obviously it's a good plugin.
yeah, he's done a pretty bangup job on the uprez, eh?

I found this piece to be.......hypnotic. I actually watched the whole thing. Pieces like this rarely hold my attention (I'm a drummer....insert drummer joke here______________)

Yeah, totally seductive. I watched it first with the sound way down, as the music in videos these days I usually see as a distraction. But again, with the headphones, he totally had me - the visuals outstanding, the song captivating, timeless...

As the French might say, a tour de force.

Nick's Settings

"DON'T touch master pedestal - leave it at 0! NEVER use any idynamic stuff. Stick to 16-235 broadcast range. My own prefferred top 3 settings in Cinelike D are -5, -5, -5, -2 (saturation) and nothing else but an S-Curve +2/-2 Shadows/Highlights if required. Get your exposure bang on 0 or a third stop ETTR. PAL Shutter divisible of 50 - NTSC divisible of 60ss. Use Filters only if you have to. Use aperture f2.8 to f11 max (on these X lenses) then use filters. Keep ISO as low as you can. Set white balance manually accordingly to a white card - i.e. never use AWB. Use LUT Utility if need a quick grade but De Vinci Resolve or other good grading products to achieve the desired look. Shoot at the right time of day!

A good pal of mine, Shian Storm (here: colorghear.com or vimeo.com/112641904 or on personal-view.com ) provides some tremendous grading techniques for the GH4 and his ColorGHear stuff is excellent."

Very nice footage. I have to say, though, that there's something incredible about the level of detail in the 4K clips. It's amazing. The HD slo-mo stuff looks nice, too, but there's a clear difference in sharpness between the HD and 4K. To me, it's almost too stark a difference to intercut between the two.

Lovely work, though. And the colors are incredible!

But...most of the 4K shots were wide and obviously stopped down, whereas the HD slo-mo footage was mainly tight w/ very shallow DOF, or wider and likewise wide open, with only momentary clarity as subjects moved toward camera. Check out the guy in the tweed hat/red sweater from around 4:28 as he passes through the focal plane. Looks pretty danged good to me, and not all a-glittery with moire on the hat as I would have expected.

I think Nick used the shallow DOF effectively to minimize the difference in resolution between the intercuts - at least it didn't jump out in my viewings. But I was pretty mesmerized by the richness of that slowly flowing human mass!

The 4k shots look way oversharpened -> videoish and tons of orange... Not my type. Not filmic at all, very digital.
Hopefully we'll get V-LOG with DISABLED sharpness and nr filter!
