Gotta buy a mic for DVX

Hey guys, I've decided that it's time to stop renting mics and just man up and buy some. I want to get a wireless cam pack to stick on the DVX and a Lav mic to attach to someone. What is the average price range for a set like this? Doesn't have to be like pro-top of the line-over the top stuff, but also can't be bargain big material.

I'm in Canada, so if you guys can find your recommendations on these sites it would be easier for me to buy.

Sennheiser Evolution G2 Wireless.....http://www.dvcreators.net/sennheiser-wireless-g2-evolution/

i read a review of that on dvcreators.net. i hear nothing but good things in the reviews. Seems good for the price..they also have a video tutorial somewhere around there. that one's the g2100 series.

Search and see if its on one of ur Canadian sites.
Also check out the sound forum and see what kind of lavs they recommend through the threads.

edit: found the tutorial for you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyVAjZq9HF8

random test with dvx and ew100 g2 that i found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oo1JlDlqCM&feature=related

looks wonderful and all....but 699 at B&H which is an american site....i think my heart just skipped a beat...

I'm trying to afford a fisheye too :P

edit: although I did find this which seems like a good deal since it comes with the receiver too

But i'm kind of confused...do you need that XLR box looking thing to recieve the mic signal or is one of those things included already a receiver? It just looks like 2 mic transmitters.

the link to dvcreators i gave you has it for $549. USD. that comes with the transmitter bodypack, reciever and mic. the box looking thing is a plug on trasmitter that allows u to turn ur shotgun mic or hyper into a wireless system. the same link i gave u has it at the bottom for $699 USD for the whole package. (wireless system and the plug on trasmitter) Dv creators is a site sponser i believe so ur safe with buying from them. Jus bought my Rode ntg2 location sound package from them ( awaiting its arrival)

bedtime for real this time :)

The Evolution system is incredible for the price. Do a little search on this forum and in the audio forum, because the question "which wireless system should I buy" is asked on a daily basis, and no one seems to take the time to find the other 384,000 posts on the same topic before they ask.

And with the G2 system, the transmitter and the receiver look almost identical, so what you see in the picture is a complete system.

No offense but the "search" feature of the forums isn't exactly Google-esque. I did a search for "best microphone", and the evolution package didn't come up. Instead I got a thread about "mechanical hummingbirds":

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=42437&highlight=microphone

So it's nice when people are willing to post links, even if the question has been asked a bazillion times.

well "best microphone" is a bit wide as there are different mics for different purposes. Maybe if u put in "wireless lav" something more specific would come up. The search funtion on the forums isnt ideal but it does point in the direction of the threads if ur more specific .It still is nice when people post links, which is why i did. Alex (C2V) is always willing to help out and is very knowlegable on alot of points especially sound and if i hadnt already covered it i'm sure he would have.

No offense taken. While the search function 'round these parts may not be perfect (the no-less-than-four-letter word limit rules out search of "lav" and "mic"), if you search the right topic (forget qualitative... search wireless and mics but not "best") in the right forum (more posts about mics in the audio forum than in a camera forum) you can get plenty of info.

The question of which wireless system to get on a limited budget is reaching the level of "what's that clunking noise," and a brief peek into the audio forum will also reveal a couple of stickies that can get you started.

And in case you take the advice to upgrade the stock lav, read this:

well i have a question...i clicked 2 of the links but havent got the answer as yet. can the g2 be hard wired? I am reading an article from "puredrifting" at the moment, about 16 lavs he tested. it said hard wired is better than wireless. I wanna know if one can get "2 in 1" so one wouldnt have to get both.

Can the G2 be hardwired? The G2 is a wireless system. Period.

Now, as for the lavs... any lav can be wired with an XLR termination. And wired is always better than wireless, but not always more practical. With hard-wired, you don't risk RF interference or dropouts, but then you have a cable running across the set and up the pant leg of the talent. Fine if s/he isn't going to move much, but if there is more movement with wider shots, wireless is a must.

So the lav is wired for either the wireless transmitter or for XLR/phantom. But if you are looking for one single lav that can be wired to connect interchangeably (unplugged from the transmitter and plugged directly into the mixer/recorder/camera), that's a tricky beast. The wiring schemes are so drastically different between the two, and an adapter cable isn't always an easy thing to find or configure. It's more expensive, but your best bet is to get two mics... one for the wireless system and one for hard-line runs.

I'm all for the Sennheiser G2 for a wireless lav, I've been using it for years and it's a great choice considering the cost.

Excellent advice!. Definitely check out the Search function in the Audio forum.
I have spent a lot of time there and it has definitely helped me from making some costly mistakes. Also, asking questions on specific topics or issues in the relevant forum helps everybody out in the long run.

It is pretty thoroughly covered around here (and elsewhere) but yeah, I've used the Sennheiser G2 systems and always been very VERY pleased. Done some work with ENG guys from the local Fox affiliate using the Lectrosonics, and even their photogs felt that the usability of the Sennheisers was much more desirable (even though my G2 system cost a FRACTION of their Lectros).

Avoid the "C" class G2 systems, though...at least in the U.S. Read up on 700 MHz and FCC to see why (hint: the "C" systems operate in the 700 MHz band).

I have one of these I bought cause I simply didn't want to spend upwards of $600 for my first lapel system. Its a VHF system and not the favored UHF systems around but I can't fault this baby. The audio is crystal clear, has a real nice warmth about it and has awesome range. I would say its the best system available for under $500 and great choice if your just starting out.
thank you. I will now proceed to buy those.

Do they have XLR out? How would i connect the receiver to my dvx?

thanks so much man. you saved me a lot of money.

Be careful. VHF is crowded in North America (well, most of the spectra are pretty busy), aside from the fact that it is less stable. That, and Azden gets terrible reviews more often than not.

Notice that you'll have only two frequencies available here, which means that you can only run two systems total. Plus, if either or both of those frequencies happen to be occupied in your area... oh, well...

As with most anything else, you do get what you pay for. And while an ideal budget would afford you Lectros, the G2s are pretty much the lowest-level wireless that most folks would recommend (I have two of them). Again, read around the audio forum for some more insight on wireless options. You may think that you've just saved a lot of money, but you may have cost yourself more time and trouble in production and post.

yeh shaun is in Melbourne so the VHF may not be a prob for him. (talking as if i even know what VHF is lol) But u get the point.

As c2v said though u may end up costing urself more in the end. Cost doesnt always translate to $$...sanity counts as well :D

Buy Good Once and u dont have to buy again.
