Got My Hvx200 Today!

I have an HVX so I am not dogging but how can you be so sure in 5 minutes that this is the camera you are going to keep? If you spent so much time with the other cameras to make a decision how can this decision be so quick?

I am currently demoing an H1. I have had it for 1 evening and I can't decide if I love it or hate it. It does some stuff so well but others are questionable. I need at least a few days to make a solid decision on what I like/dislike about it.

JUst wondering.

I am happy as well

I am happy as well

I got my HVX from Alan at Armato's last week. I, too, am extremely happy. I think that a lot of the negative stuff is overblown. From just the little bit of experience that I have had with the camera (I shot some epk stuff on a movie that I was coordinating) the picture is awesome. Also the movie was being shot on Varicam, so I had the entire camera department looking over my shoulder. Everyone was impressed including the director. The footage matched up very well with what they were already getting.
The fact that it is the "big brother" of my dvx was a definite plus. The camera is pretty easy to understand and use. I also agree that the workflow is going to get better. I just used my powerbook to download all the footage to a separate firewire drive, came home and jammed with my G5. Fortunately, i have a high def monitor hooked up to my kona system and was extremely impressed with the footage. The movie was a western and we had several night scenes and those were very crisp and clean.

I get mine next week!

I love how the film industry has been embracing this camera. Even the major players are intrigued.

There are more major players than you know. There are some that I'm not allowed to say yet, but let me just say MAJOR...

Thanks John. I wondered if Panasonic had entered into some "counter intuitive" labeling competition. There are two models of the hvx, the pal and Ntsc, and they use a "P' to indicate the Ntsc. I heard they were thinking of going with "Hvx200scam" to indicate the ntsc model. Who cares, the hvx is so amazing, they could come out with an instructional video in an Aboriginal click language, and I'd still love it.

I purchased mine (from EVS) a couple of days after I saw it presented by Panasonic at HD Expo in March. The HVX reps there were swamped.

One of the features I really, really appreciate is the P2 work flow. It's so nice not to be locked in to capture from tape.

Very easy, I know my gear. However more importantly, I have been in this biz since the mid 80's. I bought my first professional cam in 1986 when I was 16; a three tube saticon Sony M2. As for HD, its very old for me. Larry Thorpe in 1988 introduced me to HD. The HD camera that shot Julia and Julia with Sting and K Turner ( the first truly theatrical film to be released shot in HD in 1987 ). ReboHD came to the west a few years later, and that was good for open minded film folks that wanted to learn even more like myself. At Showscan I got to work with HD since Sony was testing in Showscan labs with their HD gear in 91/92/93. So it's all about experience and having an eye for it I guess.....

Btw, It was longer than 5 minutes, it took 00:06:03:24........ To know!

When I saw the H1 the first day, I saw 90% of it's issues. Two of which are HDV, and aliasing from using interlace ccd's to make a faux progressive. The H1 can look so good, however I could post a detailed report that would display the ugly side, however that does not interest me one bit. It serves no point and it's not productive...

It's hard to beat DVCproHD- True Progressive ccd's - 4:2:2 color space - I frame- etc.....

The HVX200 goes to twelve , which is the new Eleven... :-)

Questions about HVX200-Can anybody help?

Questions about HVX200-Can anybody help?

HVX200: I like it but I want to know:

1. In the two cine-gamma options, what does it mean that one affects the
dynamic range and the other affects the contrast?

2. Zoomed all the way in, it seemed to me that the focal length was limited
and at max. telephoto was equal to about 60mm. in 35mm. That's not
much. Am I missing something?

3. Why do the ND filter options come in demarcations of 1/64 and 1/8 instead
of .3 or .6 or .9 etc. as in attachable filters and gels? What does 1/64 and 1/8
mean in this context?

4. If you use manual iris, how do you meter/measure/determine your aperture
setting?

Thanks!

1. Cine-Like-D delivers maximum dynamic range. It's a flat contrast curve, so everything is kind of flat, but you retain the maximum highlight detail and maximum shadow detail. Cine-Like-V is a filmlike curve that's optimized for contrast, so everything looks sharper and punchier, but there's less detail retained in the highlights and shadows.

2. The lens has a 35mm equivalency of 32.5mm to 423mm.

3. The ND filters are two .9 filters. A .9 filter reduces the light by three stops. So a one-stop filter cuts the light to 1/2, a two-stop cuts it in half again so it's a total of 1/4, and a three-stop (i.e., .9) filter cuts the light in half one more time to a total of 1/8. Which is what the filter's labeled -- 1/8. And the other filter slot cuts it three more stops, so 1/16 to 1/32 to 1/64. Hence it's named 1/64.

4. Make sure the manual iris display is enabled in your viewfinder/LCD. It shows the f-stop in 1/2-stop increments.

Working with the lens today!

Wow......... Tack sharp as I saw in the film out in Dec 2005. It performs so well. The lens tactile is dead on. I am really surprised how well it functions. It's awesome.... It's way better than the 20x H1 lens. I mean not even the same tactile feel. The HVX lens doesn't breathe either. Jeez that's so sweet....The HVX200 keeps amazing me moment by moment!

Btw, what's a good bag for the HVX200? Not to big though, I need it for compact travel as well.

Also is the the RedRock follow focus for the HVX? Is that the one for under $500? Or is there another Focus/rails deal out there....?

Thanks

The HVX200 is the best small form professional camera out there! Perioid.....................

Pappas, can you inform us on how the focusing between the three cameras compared. Apparently all small HD(V) cameras lack a good LCD/EVF. So which one is best usable in that regard (without a Marshall screen of course)?

I have owned a H1, HD100 and now the HVX.
Pappas

Did u just return the other cameras before the return period or did u have to take a financial hit when selling those?

The HD100 was about three days rental loss for almost 1/1 /2 months of testing, and a single day of rental for the H1 for two months of use. Buying, then reselling for long term testing was cheaper in the end then renting.

The HVX had my eye since day one last march 2005. So I needed to put the others through the testing process. My results showed me what I needed to see. The HVX hits all points with me.

As I said before "the HVX goes to 12 which is the new Eleven"

No complaints at all. I would love to turn off the color though. Who knows maybe a future feature.

Btw. P2 is so addictive..... Never want to go back to tape again.............

Oh BTW, what's that clicking sound when I rock the HVX200. LoL................ :-)

Notice that it doesn't click when its powered on? I was freaking when I first heard mine do that until I powered it on :) It definitely sounds like a mechanically sound peice that is meant to flip back and forth...(Can't figure what that would be), but whatever it is it seems to get locked down when powered on.
