Got about $400, looking for a tripod system, HELP

I've used the search to try and help me but didn't get much info. I have a little bit of a budget and all this tripod will be doing mostly is sitting on a dolly, but i will be using it for a few pans and tilts. This will be used mostly for filming snowboaridng and skateboarding. I was looking at the manfrottos, but i kept reading that the 703/701/501/503 are kind of crappy, but i dont have the money to step up into the $1500+ set ups. By the way the only thing that will be on this trpod will be a DVX, sometimes with a century optics lens, so it shouldnt exceed 8lbs really.

Thanks for your time guys!

the 503HDV is not a crappy tripod. I don't care what anyone here says. i use it with my HVX and it's fine....just fine

tripod discussions are littered on the forum, 2 such discussions are on page 1 where u are posting now....u sure ur search ended up with nothing? should really try again.

there were topics on it, nothing really helped me with my specific question, it was just people saying that manfrottos sucks. the first link you posted was someone asking WHERE to buy a tripod, and the responses were basically 501 sucks or it doesnt, the other guy has 200 for a tripod i have twice as much as him, imho those don't really help ME, but thanks for trying.

lol, I here your frustration........(just kidding)....I have a 503HDV & although there is slight driftback & vibration when handling it on zoomed in shots, I would'nt go as far to say that it is a crappy tripod.

More like "acceptable" for the price.

Translation: and it's fine......just fine

:crybaby:

I heard the new 503 is a real improvement over the 501 which I have and its ok. The 503 is supposedly a real fluid head where the 501 is not. I notice that the 501 is a little stiff. Thew next think I'm getting is a 503 and new legs. From what I've seen you either get this Honda for 300 or go for the Rolls at 1k get my drift.

Tripod $399

Tripod $399

I agree with Shaun1970, Libec makes a good product for cheap. Check out the Libec LS22. We have the Manfrotto's 503hdv at work and it just dosn't move like a fluid head (in my opinion.) BH has a deal right now for $399, legs, fluid head, bag, and bonus zoom contoller. My friend has had it for over 2 years, and I plan on getting one soon. Check out the link.

I love my Libec. The legs are what sold me, this thing is so solid and free of any unwanted movement its not funny. I found with the Manfrotto's is that if you want a set of real decent sticks, you gotta pay hardcore,, the Libec out of the box is built like a tank and ready for some hardcore work to begin with.
Libec,,love it!! Glad I got mine earlier in the year for $899 plus $200 for the zooma,,,, now its $1300 for the pod and $300 for the zooma. Our dollar has taken a big dive again only buying 65us cents, it was up around 90 cents when I got mine.

You'll never see anybody here mention that as a possible alternative- because it's so damn expensive and made of unobtanium.
I was going to make a RED joke here, but then I googled it and, no kidding....
Unobtainium is a trademark of Oakley, Inc.! You can't make this stuff up!

BTW, I'm sorry if this joke is too geek for anyone else to get.

yo man! i gotta pile of tri-pods!!
start off looking at your flea markets and look for used gear !! i usually find great tripods and legs at the good ol swap meet!! mostly peices of em and save doe just buying the stupid lock peice for the head!!
i think i bought so many tri-pods!! i acualy got a crane peice by peice for 200 bux and some big head aches buying from e-bay!! but old manfrotto gear is awsoem!! good 606 head is the size of two large palms, they not made anymore!!
try bargain hunting not low balling dont affend no one just look for tri-pods with missing peices ,like quik re-lease or handles ,i get alot of em build a tri-pod for less and dont dismiss an inexpensive tri-pod for fun or quik set ups!!
face it skaters dont care how great the pans are !!! but snow boarders have a great demand for films-honest the snow bros the top dog in action sports love em helicopter fly byes!!!
invest after you find what you want,if has to be light and compact its gonna be more!!
but inexpensive gear is usauly just heavy or out dated ,nothing is outdated to me butt......
swap meet it homes!!!you can get soem usfell gear!! lights and mics al kinds of stuff!!
