Got a small job for somebody... any takers?

Cool, I'm using it for the first time on a current project. Maybe we should start a TP thread to post some examples to help others...it's definately one of the harder things to find good info on.

If anyone is interested...

I had some tech issues with the data due to multi-tasking
so I have to do it again.

hey raptor, just curious, how long did that frame take?

10 minutes with polygon reduction turned off.
I'll experiment with that setting later to get the fastest render without losing quality.

Does anyone know the polygon limit for C4D R10?
 
That's pretty fast. I know 10min x 30fps x 20sec still takes a long time, but 10 mins with all that transparency, reflections, & caustics. Not bad. I wonder how much something like that would take on 3DSMax 9?

Oops, acutally it was 15 minutes. No caustics or shading.
Caustics offer little effect for this shot I think. The main thing is refraction.

I turned on the poly reduction for a test and it calculates the new poly's pretty fast so I should be able to reduce the time somewhat. Otherwise, whew.

I know max8 buckled trying to read in my spitfire model.

At frame 92 of this sequence the poly count is 342,000. I can probably reduce that by at least 4 and probable more so it would be close to max8's limit .

I'm using a 2.4g processor and 1 gig ram.

Well the my simulation is done, used a proxy solid instead of a the high poly mesh and that worked perfectly, I'll have the pre-rendered animatrix up soon.

Been at work so haven't been able to do the beauty renders, my initial tests brought up some problems, which is that the cylinder is an enclosed environment, hence any metal shaders don't work well, but I think I'll solve it by doing what professionals do (Render in passes!) althouh it will not be technically correct (physically accurate) it will look correct artistically speaking.

My plan is to render the elements seperatley and them composit them, with DOF and motion blur and CC (as needed).

I'll post the key render shots and pre-viz animtions when complete.

For those who asked about what programs I used:

3ds Max 7, Vray, Glu3d. Material shaders used from online tutorials (I now use libary presets, saves huge amounts of time), I'll try and fish out the link if you want it.

Thats strange, I've got one scene (one of my animation project) that is pushing over million polygons and its fine (of course I'm using object culling, and adaptive degredations as well as proxy object turned on, it would not be advised otherwise).

This fluid sim is using I think 813K polys on it and its fine (a bit slow, but workable) Mayabe its your RAM Raptor, I think 2-4 gigs is usually recommended.

I like the water simulations :) That looks pretty good! What is the texture on cylinder? It looks a little metallic but I like what it's looking like :) I think it needs to look a little more like glass (the glass cylinder with the measurements on the side) with the metal frame around it. I dunno how hard this stuff is but i loved the water simulations :) They looked great!

One thing though, and here's where I start laughing at the problem,
is getting that volume through a tiny hole and filling the vessel.
I pulled out my physics book and am trying to work out the calcs again.
(It's been a few years.)

(And maybe it was my ram or the way I had max8 set up. I know I've seen that 60k limit before in several places. Maybe it refers to software rendering?

In fact I still can't fill it up but I think a little creativity with the camera can get around it, or I could add a second long rectangler emitter on the floor to fill it that way once the fluid has hit the lens.

OK. One thought though, I thought the idea was to not know it's the inside of a syringe until after the camera pulls out the back?
Putting the print on the side would sort of give it away..?..?..

hey siniarch thanks for the compliment!, I'm just learning man as I go along :) there are lots of 3d artist way above me, I've got room for plenty of improvements!

Hmm... yeah do you think the audience would figure it out? Maybe leave out the lines is a good idea :) I guess i underestimate people sometimes cuz i deal with so many dumb one's in the mall (at my job). haha
