Gords Models 2011

I think I'll start working on a fly this weekend. Was thinking about doing a giant spider but maybe a fly will give me some insight how to go about that.
So I'm going to grab a six, fire up the tunes and get at it. I have all my reference photos. I'll post some wips later today or tomorrow. We shall see how it goes.

It does sound like fun. It took me an hour to figure how to shape a base mesh for the head to bring into zbrush, even then I'll have to retopo it after. Why did I have to pick a fly to model?
I should have picked, I don't know, an earth worm or something. Or maybe a tea cup.
->>>> onward. Friggin flies.

haha. I don't know what it's going to look like. I'll try and make it scary though.

This is a pre base mesh that I'm using to block in the basic form of the head so this isn't the base model yet.
I have to retop it, bring it back into C4D and add the mouth and nose parts.
Then bring that back to zbrush and start putting some detail on it. That's where it starts getting fun.

I have about 10 reference pics of fly heads and every head shape and eye shape is different.
So I'll be faking it a bit and probably adding stuff that maybe looks cool. I don't know.

haha. Yeah, I kind of noticed that too. I was hoping no one else would, it certainly wasn't intentional. That's how a fly's head looks, I think. But maybe there is something deeper going on in my demented mind haha.

And here's the pre base mesh head retopologized. Tedium at it's finest. About 2 hours I think to do that. I have to create the other nose and mouth parts for it and model those in. And then I think I'm ready with the base mesh.

edit: 1 reference pic...

** Deleted it because I hot linked a huge pic. oops.

Thanks guys. Josh, I'm not too worried about the texturing at the moment but the hairs yeah, I have some pretty good ideas about how to do that but I want to get a bit of sculpting in I think first to try and get a feel for where it's going. Once I'm happy enough with the form, yeah, I'll tackle getting the hairs in there. I just want to see if what I have is going to work first or not. It looks a little goofy right now. Ha.

This is the head base mesh I think I'll start with. I'm going to being sculpting this a bit tonight and see if it's going to work or if I need to make some more changes. This is where it really gets fun for me.
The mesh prepping stuff is pretty tedious. Also, I seperated the eyes and the nostril/antenna things from the head mesh.

I finally got around to spending a few more hours on the fly head. About 3 or 4 I think.
It goes were it goes. (I think my fly has a disease of some kind.)

Just playing around and trying to get a feel for something.

Same as above with a simple fresnel material on it.

** I was trying to draw out some flukish/subconsious, whatever, ideas to expand on. In hindsight I probably shouldn't have posted it.

Hey Tower. Pretty crazy looking eh? I liked a couple of things there and I got some new ideas for it from looking at this. I think this one was a little extreme but that's cool cause it's just brain storming sort of, in a way I guess. There's a few parts I want to model in now and tone down the overall craziness a bit so I'll be doing it over again. Kind of the same thing I did with the Mangina. Try stuff, look at it, change it, try it again. and that kind of thing. Not very efficient I suppose but hey, what can I say.

Sometimes that's necessary, sometimes just easier, sometimes just fun to experiment. But I do I hate it when I get too far into a model and THEN notice a flaw in the basic shape. Tons harder to fix later rather than sooner. In the end it all adds to your experience.

Keep 'em coming!

This is about as far as I want to go with zbrushing.
I have some primary hairs modelled in with the remaining finer hairs to be done at render time.
Next up is making the various maps, adding fine hairs and I'll see how the head looks.

I still have the body to do also.

Thanks Guys. I got a couple more days in on the fly model. Was preoccupied with something else for a couple weeks.

I worked on the Thorax and Abdomen in C4D for base meshes to scuplt in Zbrush and that's close to done I think. (Oh, the Thorax primary hairs also needs done.)
Still have the legs and wings to do. Hopefully I'll have that done this week and maybe get into some sculpting
during the weekend. I also have the complete head uv unwrapped.

I think I've been spending more time looking at fly photos than I have actually spent on modelling.
Every fly's anatomy and look is slightly different. I'm really enjoying it though.
