I'm working on improving my modelling, texturing, surfacing, lighting and rendering skills this year.
Crits and comments are always welcome.

Mangina: March 12, 2011.

This is my first successfull creature after a few false starts.
I always liked Rod Thompsons Attack of the Mangina creature from the earlier Monster fest and decided to do one. Rod didn't ask me to, I just loved the idea of it and thought it was hilarious.

So, after several variations I ended up with this.
I'll probably have a few more shots of it later on with different enviroments and lighting.
I know it's not perfect but I learned a lot and hope the next one will be a little better as I learn more.

Straight compositing,no CC.

haha. No likey? Too shiney isn't it. It'll look better in a swamp. But, if it's that, I'm thinking maybe I can do an underground film by introducing Mr.Dick. and Mrs.A-hole and make a little underground porno out of it. Hey, ya never know. lol. It's not that serious folks.

It's pretty good - way better than I could ever do - I'm just wondering if there's some sort of freudian undertone in the design ;-)

No. It's based purely on Rod's concept as mentioned in the first post.

Pretty cool! Zbrush?
Josh
Hey Josh. Yep. I'm having a few problems, not with zbrush at all, but, ya know.

Alright, so, I'll have some updates. Personally I think these pics kind of suck, knowing what I know it can look like.
Long story. I wish people would post that they think it sucks and tell me why. But, I appreciate whatever comments I can get.

@tired: Yeah, haha. I could take Rods concept to another level, as I was joking, and I could certainly embrace the freudian undertone.
In fact, that's still a possibility. Not neccessarily this one, but in the end, I'll probably lean towards going where I get the most attention.

I'll leave it at that. This is just a hobby for me. And I still kind of suck.
But there's more than one market out there, if you know what I mean.

Hey thanks guys for posting. I'll try and have a few more grabs this week that I'm better with and then that's it. Then I'll try another moodel and see if that's a bit better.

Cool.

-Gord.

I guess it's almost time to move over to CgSociety. Man, those guys are going to beat me to a pulp, aren't they? I'm afraid to go over there.
Maybe it's time I suck it up and learn something. Jeeez. I guess. The next one I'll post over there. Man, I'm going to get battered. Haha.

Haha. Forget I said that. It was a long day. I was hanging with the boys and drinking a bit and everything sort of came out in frustration. I'm not going anywhere. This is my home man. I've learned everything on my own so far. I don't need to go anywhere. I'll stay here until they kick me out. As for updates..when I get around to it.

In the mean time, why don't some of you people post your stuff and entertain my ass? That doesn't apply to Josh, who is the only one around here that's been posting. And he's been doing pretty good. But nobody sais nothing. That's the web I guess. I don't like it. But who am I to say except my opinion.

Keep up the good work Josh.

Hey, Gord. How's it goin'? Not a lot of 3D'ers here anymore. I still look here every day but not much happening. I like the Mangina design. I think the skin textures look great, if a bit glossy. I think the leg anatomy looks really good too. Have you rigged it?

I haven't really been working on anything except an F-82B, but not making much progress. I'll post what I have later if you're interested. Still really early. Thinking about doing a tutorial from another site to improve my poly modeling. I'm kinda stuck in a nurb rut so I'd like to try something without nurbs to add to my bag-O-tricks.

Later man, keep posting!

Hey Tower, I miss you man. You were here building cars before me. I miss the old gang. Anhars gone now too. Yeah man, I'd love to see the f82 if you get it to a post. I'm still working on my Spit, believe it or not, It's just a texturing problem right now. It's a huge problem. That and I'm leanring and rendering in Maya now, which is a nightmare.

Yeah, I'll have some better posts of the Mangina soon, when I get to it, it's just so much work, ya know.

Good to here from you man. Post 'er up when you get a chance. There's only a few of us left here. I agree. Ha. Cheers man.

Cool man. I'm still working out a few things to get it looking a bit better. I'm learning maya too, so that's one of those things. I have a growing fondness for the creature though, haha.
I posted a couple more fun grabs in the first post. I reformatted my drive for it's yearly 'Cleaning of the Crud'. so that's all I have right now.

I wanted to post a few grabs for Tower concerning my Spit. I'm trying to get a metal look like this...

Untitled-1.jpg

Here's some experiments I did a couple months ago. I still haven't quite got the knack of metal texturing yet. I have the idea, just the details and balance of the different layers I still have to play with. But here's some tests I was doing in different stages of compositing. Getting closer but still needs some more work to figure it out. But I thought Tower might like it.

Hey Gord, keep them coming :). Plane is cool too! Some crits on the monster well one is more of a tech thing seems you have a white outline from your alpha on the BW image. Probably a pre-mult problem. Also, my main gripe is the texture seems like a bit to much specular on it. I"m guessing your not using SSS here right? Slowly getting into organic modeling! love it!

Cheers,
Josh

Hey Gord. I like the textures you've got going there, but not necessarily for an aircraft. Were Spits painted aluminum? I think the look you have is leaning more towards old iron or steel. The exhaust in particular is a bit too rusty for my taste. I suppose this all depends on what you're going for, though. The top two look the best to me.

BTW - Are the rivets and screws modeled or bump mapped? They look great.

Don't know if this will help but here's a tute on texturing WWII type aircraft. I haven't tried it yet but I will with the F-82B.

Later!

Hey Josh, good eye. The B&W one was just a quick photoshop slap together so it's not a true composite. The first 3 I composited in Fusion which I should be using more than I do.
I'm rendering out multipasses from maya as 32bit .exr in a linear color space so fusion seems to like those files okay.
The specular is also on a seperate pass so it's easy to bring that down in post. It's still bit tricky getting the maps right. I have 2 main spec maps actually but this one is a cavity map out of zbrush. The other one is a combination of things but I'm not real happy with it. It's a lot of trial and error right now. Your right though. Thanks.

Hey Tower. The rivets are bump mapped. I played with real rivets and just the bump and in the end the bump seemed to be working.
I'm not really going for a historically correct paint look on it. I want more of a metal steely look. Something a bit like the aircraft in Sky Captain, a bit. Not steampunk extreme but a tougher kind of look than it normally would have. A bit tank like in a way. I guess it's just a preference for a certain look I want for it. I want a Lean Mean Fighting Machine, haha.
As soon as I figure how to do that.

Cool, Gord. I dig the mild steampunk look. In that case, I think you're on the right track with the last image. Not too much, not too little. Color is good, maybe a bit less spec and a bit more scratches. Looking forward to what you finish with!

I know, I know, I know. Stand in line. I had 3 shorts last year that I tried. 4 actually , the latter without a story. I still wasn't ready. No animations this year (maybe some Mangina, I think both Rod and I are dying to see it get made when it's realistically possible) till I get a few more prerequisites under my belt. Patience Grasshopper. haha.
Patience.

You should read the script Charlie wrote about a year ago for something else. I think she has it for sale or sold it already, not sure. Talk about good.
Ask her about the airplane script if she still has it available for reading.

...I know, maybe next year I'll try the animation thing again.

Btw, congrats on your dvxfest entry. I love your new found actress and the performance she gave. She can consider me a new fan. And ofcourse I've never missed one of yours.
Keep the pace up Joe. Rock n roll man.

Hey thanks Tower. It's a lot of trial and error to see what is going to look okay or not, so, that is a pain in the ass. A lot of test renders. I can only do that for so long if it isn't coming together, right? haha. I just wish I knew how to do it and get it over with, haha. Know that I mean?

One of these days I'll get it right. Ha.
