GoPro HD NINJA!

I just got my spy camera (yes I hassled the postman ;)

I can't seem to find the answers to these questions

I've been bringing the 1080p 30p footage to compressor and converting to apple prores.
I'm having issues with that.

So now i'm trying to conver the MP4 files to H.264.

Is there a conversion map anywhere for people using GOPRO HD?

FORMAT__CONVERTER__CODEC__TOFINALCUT

1080p/30p-->compressor-->?----->Final Cut Pro

720p/60p-->compressor--> ? ----->Final Cut Pro

*update

1080p/30p-->compressor-->AIC-->FCP

this seems to work well.

I'll update when I do the 720p footage

That's good to know, thanks for the road map.

What kind of troubles did you have w/ going to prores? That seems like the way to go.

Why do you guys go through all that trouble?
Convert to uncompressed and you are golden.

Frank

Because the files would be too big for me to deal with in my editing situation.

How would I convert to uncompressed?

the AIC files are really large

PRO-RES files take forever to convert...and I was having issues on playback.

I'm matching the GoPro HD footage with my HPX170, so I'm looking for the best coded to deal with both of them in FCP.

I'm color correcting the gopro footage as well, so the best coded for that would be?

I`m using a Black Magic card. But it´s for capturing, monitoring and output only. Basically you can use any Quicktime or AVI uncompressed codec on your system or you may try the free uncompressed codec from the Black Magic site, it works without the card.

And yes the files are huge and you need a fast raid, but 1TB disks are also pretty cheap these days and 4 of them are enough for most projects. You use uncompressed only while editing and it´s a breeze cause it needs almost no processor power.

If you are done you can save your project/files in a compressed format for storage.

I use JES deinterlacer to convert 720 60p to 720 30p at 0.5x speed (nice slomos). AIC codec indeed results in large files, but works perfectly in FCE.

FCP will edit H.264 native. So why lose quality by converting to ProRes? Edit your footage natively, then export your timeline to Color via ProRes HQ.

Both formats are ready to edit native in FCP. Edit your footage, export it to Color and you are set. Transcoding to ProRes will do more harm then good due to quality loss. Plus you don't have to deal with huge files on the drive.

how would it lose quality converting to pro res? It is visually lossless, and pro res LT and 422 are even higher bandwidth than the go pro, and DVCPRO HD combined. Still 8 bit, still 422. If you transcoded to pro res hq, the 10 bit will allow for a slightly finer color grading as mathematically "Color" has more head room to work with, even if there's nothing in that extra 2 bits.

Also I find that color is a little glitchy with pixel shifted footage. Transcoding ahead of time and making your files a uniform resolution and codec offers the best results.

As far as "Color" this is entirely untrue. First of all you export to Color as ProRes. You also can only judge results upon output through Compressor or QT conversion, which in any case works from native file anyway. Color is essentially nothing else but a filter app.
ProRes is only lossless in case you have a capture card and you capture in ProRes, but if you transcode footage you lose quality- period. Just google it and you see what I am talking about.

I used a free squared 5 conversion software ( http://www.squared5.com/ ) it works great. It takes seconds for it to convert the footage into a QT based files which work with Premiere CS4. As for color correction, I do mine in Aftereffects with adjustment layers.

Hope this helps

Rich

BTW here are some videos with GoPro Footage:
