Goodbye everybody, I've got to go (F65)

thanks guys for answering my questions in depth!!! i am seriously gonna think this through before making the purchase. who knows what the scene might be like in jan. 2015 anyways. I just picked up a sweet dulcos cine modded 200mm canon L 2.8v2 EF from Paul to add to my collection of EF's. my other lens is the MP-E 65mm macro , so going PL is out of the question kinda now.

"The F65 is a 12 volt camera, has a 24 volt pass-thru circuit for 24v accessories. The camera draws 62 watts, recorder 37 watts, with EVF the entire package draws 105-109 watts; this is pushing the limits of the V-mount battery connector, which is designed with a 10-amp rating. Weight 15 lbs 6 oz for the camera, recorder, and EVF. Perhaps 25 lbs with lens, lighter than f35. The F35 did multiple downconversions on-board, separate monitoring / recording LUTs, etc., so it had 4 200-pin chips to handle image processing that aren't needed on the F65, which is one reason the F65 is less expensive than the F35, and lighter and less power-hungry than it would be otherwise."

I found this pretty interesting.

It is interesting - I think I alluded to that somewhere else.

I am actually using Hawk-Woods Reel Power batteries on my F65. They have a down-converter to go to 12v. It helps because I now have several ARRI film cameras so a 24v system makes a lot of sense. I also have a block battery which can take huge draw.

The F65 is often cited as being power hungry, but draws only about 10-15w more than an ALEXA EV and less than an ALEXA + Codex

My F65 deal has been struck. My F35 has gone to an eBay auction. Starting Thursday. I will post a link when it goes up. No reserve - starting at 99p. Any questions, feel free to ask here via PM or on eBay.

work of warning, Ebay is sucking right now. If you can, hold out a few months until October/November rolls around. For some reason Winter seems to encourage more Ebay use. I understand needing cash if you are buying a F65 but staying with a buy it now and entertaining peoples offers will always get you a better price. Before the F35 I was obsessed with the Eclair ACL Super 16mm camera's, I collected about 5 nice packages through the years, mostly buying them for 2-5 hundred when people listed them at one week auctions. I would clean the cam up, package it with the proper accessories and a cheap c mount lens and I could resell the camera for 1.5-2k by listing it at a Buy it Now and waiting a few weeks. I know this isn't exactly the same thing, but in this case you are selling a rare cinema camera. The audience you can get by setting a buy it now over a month is so much bigger than you'll get at an auction. Of course you can reserve, then no one will bid on it. Consider slowly lowering the buy it now for a month or two if you can. I guarantee you will get a few fish making acceptable offers. I completely understand if you need to sell now, I have lost money by selling items at an auction and always been surprised at the success I can have waiting for a buy it now offer.

Yachacha,

Thanks for the advice - I am going to judge my finances at the end of next week and see how desperately the F35 needs to go.

Mac - Yes, incredibly handy!

One of the things I considered when looking at the upgrade. I need a set of IRNDs for the F35, that could cost me £2,000. Getting a Codex recorder and kit could be £5,000 or more. It's nuts how much money i could spend and still have the same camera.

Plus the F65 has 120fps mmmmm.....

Would you mind shooting a side by side comparison F35 vs F65? not a technical one but a visually pleasing one. Some english landscapes, a pretty girl in the beach, a 1953 Jaguar XK-120 driving around... you know, pretty stuff. :D

This time next week both my new camera and my new lenses will be forming a pincer movement on the UK, one coming from Australia, the other coming from USA.

Anyone know who I have to sleep with around here to get a forum renamed? I don't wanna be homeless :(

Just use the "report post to mod" button and type your request / message.

My opinion still is F65 belongs with F5/F55 CineAlta section. But......

Well, the F65 is the direct successor to the F35, so there's a good argument to add it here. And I may be wrong, but I don't see many F5/F55 users tempted by the bulkier F65... I suspect those of us with the F35 may be more likely to adopt the F65 eventually...

Just my two cents.

True the F65 is successor to F35, I guess I was thinking more of color gamut and some of the similar specs as it relates to the F55.. but you're right I hardly see anyone with F3/F5/F55 contemplating an F65.

Weird under Camera & Broadcast Production -> CineAlta the F3, F35 and F65 are listed and no sign of the F5/F55?

Maybe they are disco already! :undecided

I think the F55 in particular is proving wildly popular, and RED's DRAGON seems to have hit some stumbling blocks (mostly RED's wild marketing claims), so I don't see the F55/F65 going anywhere soon.

What is latest issue with Dragon, I haven't been keeping tabs.

I know when my F55 reboots in 7 seconds after battery change on set, I get lots of comments.

The DR claims and low light, like so many other cameras, are what Red are dealing with. It's marginally better with DR from the little I have seen so far but I personally don't see how the dragon upgrade is worth anywhere close to $9K (or whatever it is now) esp. considering prices on Ursa, Cion, F35, used F65's, etc. and how close the MX is to it to begin with. Of course as we all know, ignorant producers/directors will still pay more just because the dragon was so heavily marketed (whether by red or by hype/mouth).

Long story short with DRAGON, and I have no intent on turning this thread into a RED-bashing one, it seems the first batch of cameras release had some nasty issues, including big magenta highlights, some weird gate shadows thanks to the larger sensor size, odd red sparkly artifacts, among other things. Also was only about a stop and a half better than the MX DR-wise, rather than the 3+ stops promised. RED said they'd fix this with a new OLPF. They did fix a lot of issues, but the camera is now a stop-and-a-half less sensitive, effectively, so the camera now gets noisier much faster in the shadows, among other issues it already had (weird streaking from bright sources, not unlike our CCD smear - but taking a lot less to provoke it).

It didn't help RED supplied some of the replacement OLPFs upside down (it does make a difference apparently). Oh, you have to black shade the epic constantly if you don't want issues too - although that's not DRAGON specific, but I only recently learned quite how often you have to do it.

The RED forum is filled with comical people praising how clean the camera is a 250 ISO. Every camera should be totally clean at 250, FFS. But yeah, go over to REDUSER for more details. Lot of unhappy people.

There's no need to be homeless, just head over to the Sony F65 forum - those guys seem to be having a great time shouting into the nothingness together! :)

Speaking of forums, etc.. overall I find the general activity of the Sony F's here on DVX quite low compared to the days of the F3 3-4 years ago where this place was a lot more hopping. As Mark points out, I suspect that many have just gone over to the Sony forums since there appear to be more Sony users there with a lot of good posts.

Regarding the RED Dragon, well thanks for sharing. I'm not condoning any bashing for sure, but it is good for me to be up on it a little when clients ask about using a RED and I can at least be somewhat educated on the latest shenanigans with it.
