Good news about AF100 firmware

Whats the current situation with AF100 hack? Will there be one and does it make sense and help the effort to donate for it? As I've read somewhere the af100 is quite close to GH2 in terms of technology being used so would it be a a little less demanding if the current ptool was "portable" for af100?

there are many threads on this topic already. short answer is there is no hack situation for the af100. Jan also posted a while ago that the af100 is not hackable...

Even if it were hackable, at $4,500 I'm not willing to void the warranty and possible brick the camera just to get a few more bits out of the codec.

That was my feeling. Practically ANYTHING is hackable, even if the manufacturer tells you it isn't. That said, I wasn't going to give up my AF100 for someone to take apart and determine what they could do to it. :)

There won't be a hack because the AF100 isn't hackable.
And there we have it. Impossible. Good night.

"Ya mean I read through all these posts, got my hopes up for nothing?"
"Yeah, bubba, yeah."
"Time wasting is an act of war!"
"Say what, Bubba?"
"War, Pilgrim, WAR!! Denial of Sunlight!"
"What?"
Panauser rises to his full 24 inches, 300 Panausers rise with him, "our arrows will block out the sun!!!"
Panasonic throws its hydra heads back and laughs, "Bubba, we brought HMIs. We make our own sun, Punkletius!"

What?
Exactly.

The road to nowhere!
What's the point of this thread???
A pure exercise in futility.

There won't be a hack? Okay then!!
I hope Jan makes this a sticky.
20 minutes of my life irretrievably lost.
I could have been procrastinating!!!!

besides, hacks are for devices that are good but have the potential to be great (ala GH1's mud and lack of 24p). The AF is pretty much good to go out of the box IMO. And the risk of bricking a $4500 camera- there is no feature worth that.

It's a pitty that I don't have the money to proof it is hackable, because it is. IMO Panasonic is telling us a lot of ....,
the main purpose of keeping things as it is, is money. Look at the P2-cards. In the past there were a lot of arguments why it was so good and therefore so expensive. Now a whole lot of people is shooting with SD-cards, which cost a lot less and are getting the job done. Sony was unlucky with the Express-card. Allmost every owner of the EX-series is using SD-express-card adapters. So not much profit for them to gain. I can remember a floppy drive of I think compaq in the 80ties. They changed only one wire on the drive, just to let you buy their expensive floppy-drive. So don't tell me the AF100 is not hackable. IMO it is, but why should it be hacked; it is good enough as it is. Remember why you bought it. You red the specs I suppose and all the stuff written about it, and that was it. Save your money and wait for the AF200(whatever). Indeed, it is waist of time to knock on the Pana door, they won't open it.

I don't know if anyone here is a petrol-head. I used to be. Suburu STI street racer. Spent a lot of money racing, drag and auto-cross events in the desert. So much goes into modifying a stock STI, a car that's already a race car with license plates. Subaru actually bragged about the mod-ability and even sponsored mod-shops, the most notable being Ali Afshar their sponsored drag racer setting quarter mile races in the sub 9s. So it was with great interest that I watched the arrival of Godzilla. The Nissan GTR35. Nissan claimed it was unhackable, and really there was no need. You had a $80,000 car that could embarrass a 911 from launch, on the freeway, in the corners, the skidpad, the slalom and it peed all over most cars at the Nurburgring. 480hp was plenty, why bother void the warranty on a $80,000 car? But it was only a matter of time. Now you can see 800hp and 900hp monsters roaming incognito. Crack and flash the ECM, open up the power band.
People pay obscene amounts to modify cars, so it was worth the penny to the mod-shop crowd who normally buy three or more units to experiment on.

If this AF10 hack was limited to a shop and say someone, say Driftwood charged for it. You had to ship in your unit, have it modded and we all saw you come out with 300mb recordable to a microdot with limitless space, 444 or screw it 666, hell yeah, now you'd be in a position to point to the the burning pants. Thing is this, the STI was the fastest car Subaru had, hacking it wouldn't hurt any sales. AF100 isn't to Panasonic what the STI was to Subaru. Hacking the AF100 could put cleats in the gardens of $10K models.

Personally, I don't really give a flying chilli-bean what Panasonic says. Code is code is code. Binary is binary, ASCII is ASCII. Think a military satellite is lesser than a AF100?
One got hacked by a 15 year old Russian on a laptop. Don't believe it? That's your choice.

If the limitation is in the hardware, that's another thing. If it's firmware, if it's code then say my nara, say your nara and Cone Itchy waaa!

Personally, I'm not holding my breath. I'm done buying Panasonic after this. Unoccupy Panasonic. I've been buying and using since DVX, I exit on the AF100. It'll do what
it'll do for now and that's just fine. I don't NEED a hack. I may hate the CMOS sensor and its rolling shutter and skew and wobble that wasn't there on my HPX170, but it's still
my Godzilla for now. I guarantee you every single person here will be chomping at the bit to buy the AF666 when it comes out. Complainers and worshippers alike. For me to get the AF666
it'd have to be ground-"breakingly" better than my Godzilla.
Some people are still using their DVX100s? Personally I was surprised. I wonder what they use it for? Its still good for DVDs. Personal projects or are they mercenaries like most up here?
They could care less about chasing the latest camera. Personally, I think the AF100 will be my DVX100. I'm going to shoot with it, till it's shot!

Truth is most of you can't handle the truth! You're an addict, you need that AF666, you want that AF666 and for what?
Can you do your job with the AF100? If it were the last camera on earth would you wither and die?

I once heard a fellow racer say, "hey my car is powerful enough now, I'm gonna stop modifying my car and spend money on the driver so I don't kill myself."

Jan said that there is no pathway to get at the goods. Therefore it is not hackable. Period.

If someone wants to actually prove that wrong, well, go ahead, there may be people who are interested in it. But as of now the company themselves has said that it is not hackable.
