good mixer or good mic?

Hi there. I know probably someone already asked and many replied, but couldn't find them so...

I was about to get a Sound Devices 302 + Oktava with hyper (already have a NTG2, so I wanted something for indoors)
Having 3 inputs in the mixer sounds good enough for me (2 lavs and 1 mic on boom most of the time)

But then again, I thought.. why not a cheaper mix (think PSC Pro Mix3), and a much better mic like the MKH-416? Instead of the SD and Oktava.

So maybe someone could help me a bit
Would you rather go with a:
1-Good mix + so so mic
2-Good mic + so so mix

And there's no way I could afford both good or wait until have enough money.

Really appreciate your experience : )

Go ahead and get the SD302 and the Oktava. You already have a tried and true shotgun in the NTG2.

No, it's not lke having a 416 and a Schoeps, but you'll have flexibility to tackle most projects. Though a signal chain can be no better than the mic that feeds it, the mixer is no less important. A cheap mixer will ruin a good mic. A great mixer will keep a good (but not necessarily the absolute best) mic in working order through the signal chain.

Also, the 302 gives you a pretty solid foundation, and you can work to upgrade microphones later if you feel you really need to. Honestly, both the Oktava and the Rode are favorite workhorses for many folks around here, and if you know how to use them you can get some pretty nice audio.

Here's another vote for the 302! Once you have that mixer I don't think you'll look back. And C2V knows what he's talking about :0)

Thanks for the advices everyone.
I ended up with the SD302, a Rode NTG-3 and an AKG CK93 :)
or so I will.

Good Choices Made. Your NTG-3 will serve you well on almost all EXT scenes and some INT. Your CK93 will work well both INT and EXT. SD302, you already know what I'm going to say about it. Awesome!
