I need to buy a deck so I dont wear out my A1. Anybody know a good deck to use thats not too expensive? and does it have to be an HDV deck? Why are most of them so expensive, more than the camera. thx
I had the same question when I got my A1 and found that most people are using an HV10 or HV20. The HV10 was the cheaper of the two at the time so that's what I got, but it has been discontinued. The HV20 price has dropped to about what I paid for the HV10 and could be a better choice if you need a second camera for a shoot.
I have heard rumors of incompatibilities between cameras from different manufacturers when dealing with 24fps footage. Apparently there are differences in the implementation. If I understand it correctly, Canon shoots 24fps, but is recorded in a 30fps "wrapper". Once you get it into your NLE you can do the pulldown and get true 24fps. I don't know from personal experience because I haven't cracked the 24f world yet. It would make sense to stay with Canon to maximize your compatibility.
BTW, from what I've read, there isn't much of a difference between the HV20 and HV30, and B&H expects they'll start shipping them in March.
The biggest complaint with Canon's HDV line is the lack of usable decks with their F framerates. 60i in both DV or HDV will work fine in any DV or HDV deck, respectively. The HVx0 is a nice choice because you save your A1's heads and have a very capable backup/second camera.
Unless you want to shoot in 30F or absolutely have to own a black camera, just grab the HV20
