Good Deal?

Just picked up a MHK-416T with a Rycote softie mount, windscreen, and furry windshield for $650. The mic seems in good shape. I guess I'll get to find out for sure soon. Your thoughts?

Make doubly sure you're always feeding it t-power ("AB power) and not phantom. They are NOT the same and mixing them up can kill the mic. Either use a mixer such as one of the Sound Devices mixers that offers t-power or get one of the inline adapters that converts 48v phantom to 12v T.

I see in another thread you're already aware of this ... never mind :)

there would be no harm beat the mic with phantom , its just wouldnt work
opposit is tru

by the way its not a good deal - the mic at least 15 years old probably been working quit allot , i doubt if it ever been cleaned or maintained .
i checked the ntg 3 recently and for waht it worth here ( 600us) it is VERY NICE SOUNDING MIC
with more kmr-81 attitude
416 only if i dont have a choice
by the way the t version sounds better then 48 for my ears but still no go for feature film work when you have better options

IF it's all in good working order, you got a steal! The 416 retails new for over a grand alone, and is an excellent industry-standard shotgun!

This is not exactly true, but you got a good deal. The T-Power is a very old version, and $650 is Ok if is pretty new. The problem with T-Power is that you can't go straight to a camera unless you get 48v-to T-power adapter , now you are expending more money. This is true for some mixers too, like Wendt X3. They don't feed T-power.
The MKH416 that BRAND NEW goes for over a grand is 48v and 20 years younger.
I bought a used (mint condition, just serviced by Sennheiser ) MKH 416P from Pro-Sound from their rental, with 6 month warranty for $700.
You got a good deal but no a steal.

No it's not the MKH 416T is a current microphone - it's just that the phantom version is more popular.

Sorry - not correct - the 416T is the younger mic.

The 416P was introduced in 1975 (and is still current) - at the time the 415T was the T-powered version. The 416T came along a few years later.

Just to put the record straight.
