good all around zoom for my 7d, under $600

Hi, I'm about to pull the trigger on a 7d but am not ready to sink about into glass right off the bat. Is the kit lens good or is there a better aftermarket option in my price range?

I come from Nikon so I know nothing of Canon lenses. Looking for something around 24 and up to at least 100 though farther out on either side of the range is fine.
 
I would get the kit lens to start with and then re-sell it once you have a better idea of your needs. That large a range + under $600 is a pretty tough proposition.

ok, just making sure the kit lens isn't rubbish. I know what I want eventually: 24-70 2.8. Then I'll catch a decent telephoto for the rest.
