GH2 gonna try the hack finally...

so at the moment, if i want to start experimenting,
and with my old Sandisk extreme 16 20MB/s class 6,
what's the best, highest, safest patch i can use please?
thanks.

Try this; my old fail safe:
http://sagepictures.com/seta.ini

It works on all cards, records all modes, it plays back, and is stable at gop3.*

Keeps the same buffer envelope for 24, so it retains the stability and practicality of stock. It brings AQ3 and Gop3 standards of quality to cards that otherwise would not work. The 720 60p is also great. The idea is that by allowing uneven cadence, most shots will record at highest quality, while complex shots drop down in cadence (but don't visibly detract from the image). On class 6 when recording 80% vari speed, you may need to use the lower bitrate option in 1080p, depending on the card.

Try the 44Mb CBrandin. I am using it happily, as is Andrew Reid, who shoots great vids on it (EOSHD.com) It's much the same as stock GH2, but with higher bitrate. It's still long GOP, so no stress at all on the card, so completely stable. It is like AVCHD on steroids. The GOP1 hacks are attempting to get into AVC-Intra, which is a different ball game. You will be pleased with the 44Mb hack, and with your card, it's all I would recommend. If you get a 95Mb Sandisk Extreme down the road, you can always try the GOP1 Driftwood stuff then.

Yea of course i know the long run meaning of this but i'm really short on cash, and i CAN invest in the extreme III, so how will i experiment?I didn't even hack it yet.Btw- where can i read about spanning? Didn't get it at all...

Because of an old limitation of 32 bit OSs, files must be recorded in 4 GB chunks to maintain compatibility with those systems. The way cameras do this is to close the last file, while opening a new one to continue putting down track. This is a momentary stress on buffers holding the footage to be put down, and the 95MB/s card is fast enough to clear the buffer so that the next file can be created.

Lucas,

Does this hack improve 720 capture? And if you can, which set# is it?

Thanks.

Sage,
i'm confused. your set is in fact CBrandin 44?
and if not, how do i get your set?
(my first steps, forgive me)
and another question- suppose i put this patch in ptools and upload to GH2,
what do i do when i want to upload more patches afterwards?

thank, didn't realize i just need to download the link :)
so every patch is actually uploading a new firmware to the camera, ok.
btw- in this case, just for my learning, what the main differences between yours and CBrandin?
(i really wanna start mixing up 60p for slo-mo in my next testings, so i need to make sure which patch will be the most
helpful on that, and if possible, to understand WHY ;)
(this whole GOP and generally almost half of the data in the sets is Chinese to me- is there a link that helps understanding it all?)

btw- even if my GH2 is originally Japanese, the ptool firmware is always English, right?

* there are many patches, now and in future.
so what happens after the Ptool uses all the numbers at the bottom?

You can just replace the set.ini that is no longer used etc.
You can select any language in the menu on the gh2 now.
The main difference is GOP, here is a basic link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_of_pictures

so the main thing i understood is that a patch with only I GOP each frame (1:1 every frame), is the highest quality available in this codec... (Intra)
am i generally right?

When the GH1 was hacked and the GH2 came out, many people stayed with the GH13 because they thought that the new - before being hacked - GH2 while improved in many ways, still did not match the best the GH13 could do. I wonder what will happen with the best hacked GH2 when the GH3 comes out. I mean, the GH3 will really have to deliver something special to make it worthwhile to switch from the best hacked GH2 (and the hacks on the GH2 will keep improving from where it's now right up until the GH3 comes out). Of course, down the road we may get a hacked GH3 and the cycle will repeat. But seriously, what can the GH3 get realistically so that people feel it's worth buying over a well-hacked GH2? For a zero-budget filmmaker the GH2 is already the bees-knees. It's pretty much good enough. That's not to say that I'm still not curious what Pana is going to come up with in the GH3, but I feel like the GH2 is pretty much good enough.

How much is the GOP in CBrandin 44? Can I set at 3 or 6 by example? Thanks.

Its 12, same as stock. You can't change this, its all interconnected. What makes 44 stable as stock are all the settings working together. If you want a particular gop, select a reliable patch in that category.

^^^^
that's what i don't get yet.. the 3, 6 numbers of the GOP.. quality wise, different patches, and the stock 24p.. what's the differences in those lower quality GOP structures?
the lower the number, it's more "complete" with less gaps between the frames?

improvement in codec, or a new and better one will make a huge difference..

Lower gop means:
-organic motion
-accurate noise print
-lower quantization allowed for i frames
-easier per frame access for NLE

Nothing is as big a jump as going from any gop to 1gop. The lower the gop, the more bitrate required for pure i frames.

Thanks Sage. I will research a bit more. I am in the process of getting a new GH2. I don't want a high mbits patch. I hacked my GH13 in the the low end and worked pretty fine.

so in other words, for my 6 class card i have to compromise with 12 GOP patch to get reliable results, right?
