Going HVX200

So yes. Finally made the choice: we're going for the HVX200 for our upcoming film project at our studio. Since it has to be shot in HD the HVX200 makes perfect sense.

I'll be buying a Panasonic AG-HVX20 w 2x 8GB memory cards with a bag, Vinten Pro6 tripod and the AJPCS60G P2 reader. And then of course a basic lighting kit and field monitor for doing interviews and stuff.

My editing setup is fairly basic (although I enjoy editing the most): an uber super spec PC running WindowsXP and Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0

This is where the shizzle comes in: I understand the HVX200 is not supported by Premiere and so I'll need that plugin from Raylight.

And so now my question is: do I have everything covered?

Really looking forward to start using this baby! :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

SamVT,
You didn't mention anything about audio. What about a field mixer, boom pole, shotgun mic, wirelesses, etc.?
Jim

I have the sound covered Jim, we have quite an extensive audio studio here with all the required mics - so yes. :)

In regards to Edius Broadcast : I'm familiar with Premiere (by education) and also Avid, but the latter is just a bit above our budget... So Premiere it is.

Does anyone have experience using Premiere and HVX200 with the Raylight software?

Instead of Raylight, I would use Cineform Aspect HD.
I had Raylight and hated the workflow of it, and it was, and probably still is, much slower to render.

That was the old Raylight.

New workflow: drag MXF file into Premiere, start editing. :)

Is that plug-in already ready Marcus?

If that's out, that blows away any other workflow. I know for Vegas the update to "drag MXF->timeline" totally made Raylight absolutely the preferred way to go by a massive margin.

I heard Cineform Aspect HD is optimized for Premeire ?

I use Vegas for Raylight works great for me, but I wonder for PPro users.. ..

.

What kind of project is this? If it's something major, I'd assume you might want a little better NLE like Avid (which has native MXF support), FCP (which does all conversions for you), or Vegas (which you still have to convert the MXFs in another program).

Yeah, but -- Raylight makes it so you don't have to convert *at all* for Vegas (and apparently also for Premiere Pro). Just plug in the card and drag files right to the timeline. That's even better integration than Avid, and approaches EDIUS-level integration!

Sounds good but I was actually suggesting another NLE because I don't think Premiere is very good. The comments about MXF functionality were just to be helpful. That's why I also suggested Vegas even though it works with MXFs in the same way. It just seems like if he's working on a big project he might want to try a little better NLE.

Yes Barry the Premiere plugin is ready, you can get it at http://dvfilm.com/update as part of the Raylight package, free as usual for exsting customers. There's a demo version online as well.

...

I have some experience with Premiere as we use it for various things.

For complex projects like a feature it's advisabe to split your project into 20-min "reels" be we recommend that anyway.

The After Effects-Premiere integration (like bringing After effects projects into Premiere instead of just a rendered file) is a memory hog. Running AE and Premiere at the same time is potential trouble, beasue they both have frame caching.

Other than that I just watch my "Commit Charge" and make sure it stays well below physical memory size. If it starts creeping up you probably have a codec or other system component with a memory leak, and that will eventaully cause Premiere to crash. But the same goes with Vegas and many other applications.

Raylight is well behaved in that it does not allocate new memory when you add multiple tracks and clips of video, so it should be very stable.

Fantastic. Does it support on-the-fly pulldown removal and everything? You should contact David Jimerson immediately so we can get details of this into the Premiere segment of HVX BootCamp Vol. II!

Thanks for all you do for the HVX and DVX community, mvb!

Yes it does, 24PA removal for 1080i, DVCPRO50 and DV, 3:2 pulldown removal for 60p. Both 50Hz and 60Hz formats are supported.

I will send him a note.

Thank You!!
