Going back to 1/3 inch after using a DSLR.

Feel really good, I can't beleive I've filmer a whole year with one of these thing. The HPX is one hell of the camera. People say DSLR are good for lowlight, but I would never put my GH1 over 640-800 iso, while I don't even mind pushing this thing to +12db witch is around what? 1.2k iso? The grain looks bette ron this camera than anything I ever experience, this is like buying a HD DVX100, I simply can't get over how this is simply better dans a DSLR for like everyting exepct details and DOF.

Anyway, sorry for this useless post but I just thing the HPX is one hell of a camera.

hpx170 is one of a kind. As for details, hpx and a macro lens kick a$$. As for dof, adapters rock but the range of dof on the stock lens is so so so useful.

i keep getting just about to the point of buying a dslr.
then i stop and ask myself why.

i too really love my 170. right now i'm thinking about buying a dslr, but also have to justify it by the fact I take pictures. If I didn't also take photos, then I would just buy an adapter.

yeah, that has been my logic as well. i had a brevis rig and a pretty nice nikon d2000 setup. and my thought was "hey, get a 5D. kill two birds with one stone!"
so i sold it all - BEFORE id had much time with a 5D. then i used the 5D for a few days, and didnt really care for it.

so now im forced to replace two items OR go back to where i started. its a lose lose deal from where i stand.

lesson learned: do a LOT of research!

No, although it can do a 1920x1080 frame grab. I didn't know you wanted to do stills; I thought you were considering DSLR instead of HVX+adapter?

i was referring to thekeygun's post above about wanting the device to do double-duty, stills+video.

Agreed, the 170 is a beautiful camera, great "touché" (organic touch, could become a fashion trend , A la Super 8 in few years ...) the same here was shooting for over a year with 5D mkII and 7D. Recently for a job I did a corporate video with wide and long lens shot all in exterior . The HPX 170 footage came out fantastic !
Barry is right ! I am now waiting for the AF-100 to become available in the region .

One day we will look back at DSLR as a passing fad. They are after all still cameras adapted to shoot video. The big attraction being depth of field and the flexibility of interchangable lenses.
The Panasonic AF100 addresses both desires and it records audio too.
Even DSLR guru Philip Bloom appears to be impressed with the AF100 http://philipbloom.net/2010/10/19/af100/

And I am keeping my HVX 201 :-) am waiting for AF101 to arrive here and to hold it in my hands but I simply do not like AVCHD as much and am contemplating the 171 for B-cam instead.

I think the HMC/HPX in combination w/ a DSLR would make for the perfect documentary package. HMC/HPX for long interviews and audio and run and gun stuff and the DSLR for landscape/emotional/stealth/bcam stuff.

I have a big problem inserting GH13 footage in my HVX timeline! The colour is so drastically different that I would like to find if somebody has some colour settings to match the two. or maybe settings for the color plugin in FCS? I have yet to find a good way.

I never got rid of my 200a when I bought my 5d2...then 7d. I've also kept the EX1...and they all take care of different tasks...my DSLRs are kinda like my sawzalls...I don't get to use them all the time, but when it's a shot that calls for their strengths, it's exciting to have them on hand.

Not to mention, it has significantly reinvigorated my passion for still shooting. I've always had a decent point and shoot...but since the DSLRs....I've shot a LOT more still photography, and animated some of it with motion in commercial shoots. I won't ever be without one from now out, but I believe more to take advantage of the still abilities...as I, too, eagerly await the release of the AF100. My only concerns are their behavior with Canon glass and how the electrical (aperture control) works. not concerned about AF...just the ability to electronically control my exposure.

That said...I needed another camera for a gig late this past summer. I was able to pick up an HPX170 on Craigslist. Absolutely correct! What an AWESOME camera!!! I love it! I'm going to sell my EX1 soon in anticipation of picking up the AF100. These Panasonic cameras are awesome. My 200a is still a rock solid camera...and in my market, most bozos are still shooting SD due to their past investments. My 200a/170 footage mixed with a little 5d2 for specialty shots are making some excellent footage these days! In reality...this rig was just over $10k, as I bought my 5d and 200a new (3500 kit on 5d2 and 5200 for 200a at release)...but I got my 170 for 3k on Craigslist....with FOUR hours of use! it's brand new!!!...so again, with an L series zoom lens 24-105 on my 5d2, the 170 and the 200a...both with 16gig cards...for just over 10k! Unbelievable kit for such a reasonable price in this day and age. Cool to consider the same with the AF100...I think, along with a 170 or 200 if you have one...you'll have the perfect 2 cam setup....which in many markets, and in many disciplines...is a working setup! Grab some light, and you've got a serious kit.

I think that's what the DSLR has brought to the table. A "not so" perfect intermediary, while we waited for the new 4/3 and S35 sensors to hit the market. Sure...they have their issues, tons of them compared to these 1/3" cams...but damn! They hit some shots really, really well:) I would NEVER, EVER want to rely on just a DSLR for ANY kind of shoot though....

Shooting with a 5D for a while (mainly because the agency wants me to use their gear to keep down renting) I´m always happy to go back to my HVX200.
Even without 35mm adapter that camera still rocks.

I was in an open air museum last summer, that features a complete German village at about 1910-1950.

No Disneyland, all the houses and "props" are real old. Absolute time travel.
I spend that weekend there with some of my reenactor/living history friends and we did an impression of occupied Germany in September 1945 - the first summer in peace.

Since I had myHVX200 with me, I had the idea of a little drama.
The museum opens at 10:00 so we had just 2 hrs to shoot when we start at 8:00.
Well, we started at 8:30.

Of course it was all very quick run and gun, handheld without sound and light - exactly the combination I usually hate - but on the other hand it also was some kind of challenge for me, since I never done something like that.

I think the HVX200 did an awesome job.

here is an other one, more just impressions, I shot during the whole weekend.

I don't miss any DOF in that shots, heck I actually think it doesn´t look like video DOF at all, but kind of cinematic.
I see a movement towards that more cinematic DOF and away from DSLR DOF.
I did some writeup on that subject: http://frankglencairn.wordpress.com/2010/12/21/deep-dof-a-new-trend/

Very nice Postmaster! I've done a lot of Civil War and Revolutionary War stuff here in the States and it never occurred to me that other conflicts would have folks reenacting as well.
The images did very well with no dialog...hung with me through the day. Germans filled all the roles?
