Glitchy GoPro editing

So i recently bought a GoPro but found when i drag the footage and start cutting and putting scenes together, there is a slight pause, almost even rewinding a frame or 2...when i play back frame by frame, it seems to flow nicely, but in regular speed its just not smooth. Also i have to render anytime i add an effect or change the speed and it seems to take a while. I havent had this problem with any of my HVX200 footage. Is there something im missing?

The GoPro footage has to be converted into an editing codec.

Pro Res works fine, and you can use either MPEG Streamclip or Compressor.

I downloaded MPEG streamclip and tried converting a few clips. I set it to output at 100% quality, and pro res 422 and it seems to 5x the size of the regular clip. Is this normal? I dont really have enough room to start multiplying the GB by that much and what exactly do i convert it to? Quicktime? AVI? These probably sounds like newbie questions, and thats exactly correct. Any help would be much appreciated :)

On the GoPro website they have a free program that trans codes your GoPro footage to Cineform.

Yes. Prores is an I-frame codec, H.264 is a GOP format. I frame formats take up much more space but are significantly less processor intensive.

You could also give Prores 422 LT a try, that should help save a little space. No matter what, you're going to get much larger files than the raw footage though.

Why would that be necessary given the whole Prores family that comes with FCS? Are there specific things that it's better at?

Cause the Gopo software does some addition magic in the color subsampling. Also you can then Firstlight for real-time color grading
