Glidecam, Rig or Both?

Hey everyone

I wonder if you can help me out. I've been painstakingly researching the best kind of DSLR set-up I can get on my budget, with the help of you guys at dvxuser.

I'm going to be shooting behind-the-scenes / making-of type stuff....the bulk of it's going to be very handheld and unpredictable, intercut with some interviews which I'll have more time to set up. So, here's the deal...I've decided to go for the 550D rather than the 7D which allows me to spend a little extra on a viewfinder, extra lens and a decent tripod and fluid head etc.

What I'm stuck on is this... I was pretty set on getting a Glidecam HD 2000 as opposed to a "rig" (I can only afford one or the other really). I figured the Glidecam will help me get smoother shots when I'm rushing around following the action. But is the Glidecam the kind of thing that I can be using a lot of the time, like you would an Easom or a Hangrip?

Or is that unrealistic? I guess what I'm asking is can a glidecam kind of act as a rig? Or do you think I really need to be thinking about getting a rig as well as the Glidecam? Or do you think one of the rigs mentioned above would suffice on its own, and give me the smoothness and stability I'm after?

Hope that makes sense - I'm a beginner to the DSLR world so forgive me if it comes across as a tad dumb...Thanks so much for reading this and looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

The glidecam can only be used for a few minutes at a time, it's hard work! Have you thought of getting a monopod or maybe a glidetrack shooter?
