Giving Raw footage To Clients/Memory card vs. Tapes

Thanks for the input Barry... although it comes with some transfer time after the shoot (if they want it right after), it's probably what I will recommend most to my clients...

There are 64gb thumb drives available and a few 128gb even... soon as the prices drop on these it would be a perfect alternative to a usb HDD. I think I only had 1 shoot go over 64GB so far.

Why people buy USB thumb drives instead of a USB card reader and a bunch of SD cards is beyond me.

You buy a thumb drive because its super small and holds more then my 16gig cards (or even 32 max)... Also, there is no SD cards to loose, and the client gets all their footage in 1 little device that doesn't need a usb converter. Its probably faster, seen some clock 30+MB/s.

Oh and the biggest thing is, the fact that its not my SDHC cards that I may need the next day.

Well maybe that's why I considered it - all to their own.

I prefer a reader because it is relatively compact, about the same size as a regular USB drive. My reader has a cover, so with the SD card inside it looks like an ordinary USB stick. I have not lost a card out of my reader yet. I prefer to invest into a more universal format that I can use in my camcorder, digital camera, media player. I am geting about 17 MB/s from my cards. Capacity is not a problem, I have a case that holds 8 SD cards, and I have one reader.

Personal uses are going to have a different purpose than "Giving Raw footage To Clients/Memory card vs. Tapes" - which is the name of the thread...

Hey ALL!

This is probably the best option at the moment..... 250GB WD USB HD for $54.99!

Its recertified (refurbished) but at this price they are disposable. I also saw some good deals on Solid State HD's, but still a little to pricey if you are buying a few.
