FS7: Girl N Gun

This may not stay online long! Some shots..

I graded it, fs7.slog3.4k

I guess the macros are my nikkor 35-70 or 55 2.8
The push in is the CanonCN 50 or 80 (interesting bloom on the handcuffs)
Dodgy top shot is my 35.28e which is a bit soft
Others are INTs probably nikkor 50 1.8 and nikkor 85/2 and exts 35-70 3.5
The night scene was night for day

The grade was green in the hospital inspired by bad flouros but actually lit with kino and tinted in post
The ext is surreal gold.. done in post of course even with a bit of added 'flare'
Exit the kitchen you may note a huge pull of exposure along the door line to even the INT/EXT

Thanks for posting this. I was waiting for my day off to watch and comment.

Fantastic work Sam! I really enjoyed it and I felt empathy for Sarah. She gave a great performance and I like the fact that she doesn't speak until the end, it made all the more powerful. I was too engrossed in the story telling so perhaps I need to watch it again to comment on your work. The film has a wonderful horrible look and perhaps it may be hard for some to watch. It's nice to watch something that says something rather than being mere entertainment. I'm sure Shane Meadows would love this short.

The only thing I would change would be removing the last two shots, but hey I'm a pessimist.

Are you happy with the final film or would you do anything differently now it's finished?

And on a technical note, how was filming with FS7 and were you pleased with the final images?

Keep working at these projects and I look forward to your next film.

Thanks for watching.

the film.

I agree the last two shots not required.
There are some weak story telling elements like the transition of time through her time in the house, finding money for food, and the like.
I think we missed some options for 'gun play'
For example she could have put the gun to the door when the council worker visited.. this would have been emotive as the council worker certainly did not deserve to die.
It would have been nice to see some bullets.
the gun felt a bit fake even though it is real and deactivated
I think that her life was a constant tragedy rather than one clearly ramping up from bad to worse.
Overall one sees the complexity of making really good films both story, acting and telling that story (with simple film making that orientates, marks the passage of time et al.)
I made a huge error to not shoot the party to her.. it is not clear she is outside while there is a party occurring.

The party shot was the hardest of the film as shot in bright daylight so we had to make a complete tent to shoot from outside to in.
I was also basically underpowered for the final scene which was supposed to have a desert vibe (reflecting the Sp westerns) I needed more lights for that scene.
I was happy to relight the 'hospital' to make it flouro for dad and hard evening light for her, hopefully hiding that it was the same location.
Art direction came together well as did the locations, I think this was luck not judgement! The school was a bit new but securing a school that would allow firearms was a mission!

the camera stuff
I shot 4k for HD, I think the images are pretty good, but a little flat and thin on occasion the codec a little weak after the very heavy grading.

Grading was a mission! It is quite a thing to hold consistency over 18mins.. I dont know if I did that.

It is also worth noting that everything was shot in the day so there was much blacking out of windows and building ambience from nothing.

The real let down camera was the GH4 which I used on steadicam and the over the bed rig.. I really struggle to make that camera look nice.

Awesome and thanks for your comments. I'm sure it was a great experience and a labour of love for all. I think you did a sterling job

I think the grading is fine. 18 minutes of footage through Resolve would kill me! The content / storytelling is the most important aspect and you could watch your film silent and still know what's going on which is how cinema should be.

I was looking at the GH4 or a GX8 to replace my trusty 5N, I don't think I'll bother now. Cheers

Great watch, thanks for posting!

Really strong beginning both editing, sound and cinematography working together.
Like the wide shots outdoor alot. What lens did you use for those?

Very nice skintones and colours in general, seems you have learned to massage the FS7 well.
Only one shot made my inner intermediate colorist react a little bit.
I believe it was in the school bathroom where the mid-shot from in front of her looked greener than the previous ones.

Cheers,
Ed

Oh and I forgot:

Im looking into the Nikon 35-70 3.5 and I see there is both a AI and AI-s version. The AI-s version seems to have a macro mode. Which one do you have?

The outdoor shots were probably on my 10-24 Tonka very cheap nasty lens, also covered in raindrops in one shot.

The walkie shot is with my 50-300

If I remember correctly the school bathroom actually had different colour walls.. blue by the mirror and green at the back, when a consistent grade was applied it just looked wrong even though it was technically correct.
I think I tried to make the green wall blue in post!
A wide establisher could probably have orientated the viewer to the change in wall colour, but I dont think I shot one.

..but it will not go close enough for a shot like the ECU of her eye I have a 55 marco too, and just bought a 200 macro but not tried it as it turned up too late for the shoot I was going to use it for.
