Im into actually grading a short I shot on the FS7 -

British and depressing, with a bit of surreal at the end.

Dismal britain.. might take more blue out of the sky

While the chatter goes on the look thread, Im doing a pile of looks.. really good to sit down with some footy - here pumping the saturation a little..

Some great framing there Sam. Is the bloom/diffusion a post effect or are you getting all pro misty?

also I think there's just the right amount of blue in that sky

Funny you should ask.

The 'finale scene' where the girl fronts the other kids with her gun.

I wanted a bright/surreal feel as it is somewhat a good/bad/ugly showdown.

In the tights there are two redheads just out of frame flaring like a mofo.

I did not have the firepower to recreate that look in the wide.

The grade above I added blur to a node which is qualified above about 800 - aka the higlights are blurred in post - giving a shimmer to her shirt.

Im thinking that I will also add more fake flare in the wides by some nefarious means that I have not worked out yet.

The reds where right in behind her on a shot like this - I had a semi pro gaffer who was somewhat questioning of the set up.. actually it didint flare enough!

Good work. I once shouted at an AC because I'd spent a hour setting up a macro shot and he helpfully moved it to get rid of the flare I'd induced!

Cool shot Sam, reminds me of De Palma's Dressed to Kill.

Your images have a Western on drugs CHAV vibe mixed with Ms 45. Keep working on it.

If it looks like any form of film that is good enough for me.

I don't even know what film looks like these days it's all so overgraded by the studios. If people want to know what 'film' looks like then they need to watch films made before 2000. All you can do is make it look as good as possible and who cares really if Tom, Dick or Harry thinks it looks Sony. Your average Joe doesn't have a clue what a Sony look is. I think your images look fine and say a lot so keep working at it. That shot of the kitchen reminds me of the 1980's / Thatcher's Britain.

Our baddie has less hair. A sign of the times?

He looks like me. A sign of getting old :D

Interesting that you framed this for 2:35 rather than 1:85. Any reason for this?

Paul - internal 4k Down scaled to 1080 - probably slog3 custom - maybe EI in the day EXTs.

Lens? - I don't actually know - either 35-70 nikkor or 55 2.8 nikkor 80s mf versions

Really I didn't mean 'film the capture medium' I meant film as in 'believable narrative fiction' as opposed to 'the shopping channel etc.'

I guess I want my stuff to look like The Bridge, Breaking Bad, whatever!

2:35? I just think it looks cooler - my 702 has crop marks the directors monitor was taped.

Thatchers Britain? - kudos to the production for securing the location (a completely empty council house) and using an art department who dressed and propped it.

As always sir, your shots look great.

One thing I will say is that wide exterior shot, if ever there was an argument for using a tilt/shift lens, that would be it.

The wide ext was shot by the A/C while I was setting up my Steadicam on the Stigma 10-24. It is an interesting point.. I do own a 28 shift which I have used in motion shoots on the 5d2, with the speedbooster it regains relevance for the FS7 but Ive sort of let it drop out of 'a' lenses bag. In stills shooting I regularly straighten in post.. I consider that more controllable and to have better results than lensing it on location. I might try a little correction.

I only noticed as I'm currently weighing up the pros and cons of buying a t/s lens vs straightening in post.

Oh, I really like the lighting and composition on the girl in the f/g, couple on sofa in the b/g shot.

I dont really know - for stills I would not bother with a shift lens (I use a nikkor 20-35 and on occasion 14 2.8) but stills you have res to play with.

For S35 video I dont know what lens you would go for (I dont follow lenses!)

Of course a tilt lens is not properly recreatable in post. For tilt I use a mamiya 80mm.
