Gini Rig...

just won a DSLR RIG EXTREME-17 PLUS http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&rt=nc&nma=true&item=250809601672&si=5vVdks88oQcBin34esLgVMywKGA%253D&viewitem=
Buy it now was 2000$, won it for 515$ he shipped it 2 days after I paid him. It is a killer deal, but I'll wait till it comes to make more conclusions. Customer support is terrible however as others have pointed out. I sent him 3 messages, written very simply and I stressed it is important that he answers, never got a reply and he's sent it. I asked him if it would be possible to change the hummer handles with magic handles at an extra cost, and whether he can declare as lower value to help me out. never got an answer. For that price though and for what you get, I can't complain that much.

i feel he's a reasonable enough young chap, perhaps you should have held on to payment till everything you wanted customize was firmed out, thats what i did and he replied quickly enough and considerately. i hope you enjoy your rig, i certainly am enjoying the stability mine gives me now. :D

cheers to ivan lee too! he's really reasonable once you manage to get hold of him (to reply emails).

My rig came in today. All I can say is wow. In my last post I complained I never got an answer to my questions about if he could replace two handles with the magic ones at an extra cost and about duty taxes. Well what do you know, I open my package and he had replaced the handles, at no extra cost. I wasn't charged any extra taxes or anything, he also added 2 extra little rods. I mean i am stunned. I paid 515$ for a rig with buy it now of more than 2000$, he put more expensive parts with no charge. Shipping was very quick and I had a tracking number as soon as I had paid. The amount of parts I've got for the money is amazing, and the best part is the quality and design. Astounding! I 'll probably do a big review once I've played around with it a bit more. Anyone who has hesitations, don't, even if you think he's not listening , he probably is, as in my case. Excellent seller and I'm not aware of any better deal anywhere. Did I mention the looks? sexy matte black anodized finish, great texture, even the counterweight is high grade, great looking. I always preferred black rods instead of silver.

His rigs are pretty nice quality for sure. However, it does seem like he's not a shooter. Some of his rig designs are not so great. But, luckily with all the parts you can get for super cheap, you can build what you need for your uses.

Has anybody noticed the wholesale section on his website? DRAMATICALLY reduced prices on his stuff when it was there. Now thats gone but he has sample sales for resellers and DSLR even sales. Really low prices on some of his stuff.

Anybody successfully order through his website?

These rigs appear to be good quality and very modular.
I will try one from gini and give impressions here.
My complaint with this kind of shoulder support systems and dslr cages in general is that they appear to be excessively overpriced (not only the gini ones, but other brands too).
I don't know the exact production cost of the individual cnc metallic parts, but asking 500-1000Eur for a shoulder support or a cage (jag, handy, letus, redrock etc.) just sounds crazy to me.
Also gini-seller appears to put excessive buy it now prices, when he may accept offers about 1/5 of the buy it now, which may still be slightly overpriced for what it is!
I don't know. Makes me wonder.

I just did a few days ago on the Gini1 website and after reading this thread, got a little bit worried. As with most cases, i emailed a couple of times just to check if the package has been shipped and never got a reply. Glad to say though that i got an email from paypal today (3 days after) that the package has been sent and i have a UPS tracking number now. Whew! Can't wait!

It is my understanding that he doesn't speak English so well and that is why his response is slow if any at all, however it is true that the stuff is nice quality and he does ship in a timely manner.

on my rig I replaced the rods that came with it with longer carbon rods from Indifocus guy which made the rig a whole lot lighter, I have the old style grips before he came up with the new grips which I dont mind because I have very large paws and doubt my fingers would line up with the finger grooves, however soft foam bicycle grips fit great and offer more comfort for my large paws.

either way considering how much I paid for this rig versus what other manufacturers are asking for similar stuff (and yes this stuff is really nice quality too not cheap junk).. well it does make you think.

Highly recomended you look at what his history on prices are and offer the lowest, I think he is inclined to accept.

Hope this helps.

Hi all
anyone know if the gini rigs are all threaded with standard 1/2" threads, or some other threading?

thanks

Dom

I also was unable to get help ordering more 90 degree parts, etc. The reply I got was a simple URL to his site's homepage. So I went there and emailed because I wasn't able to find the parts I wanted. Never got a reply. I wrote him 5x in eBay's PM, but he just can't speak English, which is (for him) expedient. The hi/o thing he's doing with $2K/$499 for the Extreme Plus shows he's learned a thing or two about capitalism ;-) but I will confess I was pissed when I saw it was $100 cheaper on his site (after I bought)! But, live all others, his quality (not configurations) probably equals or exceeds what you'll get from Zacuto or others. Was sniffing at his matte boxes, but with parts availability being so sketchy, and the ability to add stages an impossible question to ask, I dunno. Also wish he had 19mm systems.

Previous of eBay purchase I was able to get an email response from him asking about the newer "Magic Handles" in replacement of the older Hummer ones. He told me it would cost more and referred me to the Gini1 site. I also asked him about that as well, and it is not him, but a third-party dealer. On the site itself you'll notice sales for re-sellers. I guess he does not mind sending people there for spare parts though.

I decided to skip on the handle upgrade and bought the Extreme-17 package on eBay. To be honest, I felt better buying & paying through ebay than the 3rd party website. As other people have mentioned in the past, definitely try to offer a price on a Gini rig to save some money rather than purchase through an auction or buy it now price. He does reject bids if you look in the history, but I am assuming they were rock bottom prices. He accepted my first try. I noticed all his currently on ebay at the time of writing are auction/buy it now prices, so hopefully he puts more up soon to "make a bid".

As to the quality of the product, I am impressed. It is machined from solid metal and is very sturdy. At the same time, it can be a little heavy. People mention a lot of front heavyness w/ Gini rigs, and if it is an issue with you, try to find some lighter carbon fiber rods and accessories. The shoulder pad is pretty basic and is probably going to be the first thing I replace after I get the rest of my gear. Another minor issue I have is the baseplate design. The knob to tighten the camera onto the plate can be difficult since it does not stick out very far, nor does it allow me to use a flat head screwdriver to tighten it. This leads to a little bit of play and the camera can be twisted on the plate if you try to move it around. I have not come across a time where it actually did loosen on me during an event, but it will probably be something I will replace in the future too, especially since I use a battery pack with my dslr. Other than that (oh, the shoulderpad smells ...) it is well built. Make sure your knobs are tight and it'll hold together fine. Shipping took about a week for me on the west coast.

For the price point, you cannot deny this being a fantastic rig for the indie film maker, and please don't try to compare it to $1500+ rigs. It doesn't cost that much, so it shouldn't be considered. Some things are worth paying $ for, but if I can save a few on items still of high quality, I'm going to take that route. My current rig setup includes the Gini Rig (Extreme-17), Red Rock Micro 4lbs weights + cheese plate, Zacuto 2.5x Viewfinder, and a follow focus in the next few days (didn't like Red Rock's play)

Hello fellow rig hunters!

I just wanted to let you know that I purchased a DSL 17 Magic Plus rig from here (http://www.gini1.com/) which seems to be some kind of reseller only store, if I am not mistaken.

There is a promotional category, the prices there are crazy low! although shipping worldwide adds 100$. But even that didn´t kill the deal, it adds up to 299 Euros total for a complete and solid rig of crazy good build quality and even good looks! I couldn´t be happier!

One day after paying via paypal I received an UPS tracking number and just a few days later, today, it arrived at my door.

Everything that´s shown on the pictures in the store was included so I really don´t know why they added a "clone" to the name in the shop.

Well, that´s it, just for you peoples here worrying (right after ordering I started reading this thread and it got me very worried...but no longer.).

EDIT:

I forgot to tell you, that I of course am not a reseller or whatever. I ordered just as normally as I´d do it on amazon.com

Got mine in about a week, which was impressive considering where it came from. Box was torn, stuff almost hanging out of it. No instructions. Still, nice stuff compared to what is out there.

mine come with missing parts and wrong rods size. Can't explain this to the seller. He does not understand a word in english.

Right now on Ebay there are half a dozen Gini rigs about to complete auction that have all mysteriously been bid up to $299.00. Six different listings (at least), all of them miraculously arrived at the same price at the same time...

:thumbdown

I am now back in the US, and just ordered a rig from Gini1.com yesterday. I got a tracking number today, so we will see how it goes this time. I will keep you guys updated on the rig.
