SHORT: Ginger Problems

This was shot on a hacked Panasonic GH1 using a Nikon 50mm 1.4 and a Canon Vixia HV30. Let me hear it folks. How'd I do?

I enjoyed it.

The framing was really nice, the sound was good. Straight forward which helps with something like this.

The color is the main thing that bothered me. It looked a bit washed and the image didn't seem very sharp. Also, the motion was a little weird in a few places (for instance when the cereal eating guy turns his head to see the milk guy coming). What FPS did you shoot this at?

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. The color has a grade on it. I lifted the blacks to push for a more filmic look. The sharpness might be due to youtubes compression. Especially if you didn't watch it in HD. The whole thing was shot at 24 fps. I don't know what motion issues you are talking about. Maybe the video didn't play back smoothly right then. Try watching that part over.

I liked it! Quck and straightforward.

A bit of a punch when the guy walks into the pool with his clothes on. Then again with the closing line of course.

Great sound! I know that sounds odd, but I listened to the sound of the water, birds, sliding glass door, etc. as much as I watched. Great clarity there, much appreciated!

Given that the film delivers so quickly, it wouldn't hurt to have the title be part of the "clue" that the viewer "gets" at the end. I can't think of a good example - Brother Problems, something like that. That is not a "negative", just a suggestion. "Ginger Problems" made me think it was going to be about a relationaship?

The only small visual oddity was the cuts from the blue - cool - water to the warm - green and yellow - grass with the guy on the chair. It may just be the fields of color, or the grading may have compensated - those two scenes just feel like they don't go together from a color standpoint. You might take a look at skin temperatures, etc. - though it may be more psychological, the large flat green vs. blue?

I don't know if there is a way to pull those together visually, even if the color balance is technically correct for each? Different lenses on the two different cameras? I know trying to compare, say, a Canon lens and a Zeiss lens, the first step is to do auto color on each (on the same scene - wouldn't work here) to get a consistent look.

But that is nit picking from a techie of course! Those are easy to fix in post, as is sharpness if that is an issue. It was a bit pixelated at times, but I didn't watch in HD, so I cpuldn't say anything about sharpness. . I'll go back and watch it in HD.

Overall a great short, quite well done. Congrats!

I hope you had fun, and I hope you liked it! I always hated everything I did since college (30 years ago), still do. Too much of a perfectionist, which gets in the way of learning. Much better to be happy and enjoy your work!

Cheers!
Michael

ETA: This isn't a place to hand out "grades." But FWIW, I gave it an "A-" at first - the only distraction was the color that I mentioned. Then I thought, no, that's not appropriate ... Anyway, I am watching your YouTube channel, definitely some professional stuff, so I thought I would share! Congrats!

I don't approve.

Seriously though, it looked great. Audio was good, shots were all framed well, editing kept a nice pace. The guy not missing a beat as he walked into the water was great.

I felt the comedy was a bit slow for my taste. I got a chuckle out of the "walking fully clothed into the water" bit, but the rest of the piece seemed a bit tame.

Great work overall, keep posting your stuff, it's definitely worth a watch.

unadog! Thanks for a great review! I agree with you on the colors dealing with the water and the green grass. As I was editing it I couldn't keep my eyes off of it but didn't really know what to do about it. Glad you enjoyed it though. ErikTande, I appreciate your comments! My sense of humor has been described as dry on occasion so I understand when you say it was a bit tame. I usually shake things up with each new video so I highly recommend you check out my channel. I'm sure there will be something that fits your sense of humor ;) http://www.youtube.com/kcmgtv1
