Hey guys,

Finally put together this little spec spot for Gillette. Shot on the FS-700 (with 4k upgrade). Used an r5 recorder to get RAW out of cameras. Used Leica-R primes.

Criticism welcomed.

Enjoy.

That was real nice. They only flaw I think I see is the lack of actual shaving action in the shaving stroke closeup, like the cover is on the shaver.

Yes! And being that it's suppose to be the product shot, it might actually be a bigger flaw than initially thought. Should have listened to my inner voice the day of!

truthfully, if it wasn't pointed out to me, I would have never noticed. Looked fantastic.

Right, you have to remember that folks here are going to take a more critical look than most viewers. If this was for a contest and a contest judge was an expert on shaving commercials then a more critical look would certainly be justified.

Thanks. But as J Michael said, it's true that the people "in charge" are looking at things a bit more detailed. Especially if your selling yourself as a commercial director and making a spot for Gillette, the first thing they'd want to see is how you make their product look.

Here's an official Gillette spot. While not a fan of the actual spot, the last two shots (0:20 - 0:23), do showcase the product nicely.

Yea... I have to admit, the first time I watched it, the fact that it didn't actually cut anything just stuck out like a sore thumb. When I came back here to read after viewing, glad to see someone else noticed also. Oddly enough (or maybe not oddly) the official Gillette spot has the "clean" look after swiping. I'm not so sure a "detailed" look is required. That 2 seconds is the whole point. Clean, close, smooth, shave. The spot itself was great, loved the "Baroque" ish / Renaissance look.

minor point about the guy before the "explorer" The instigator gave me a vibe that might be of concern to a larger company that might not want to make reference to contemporary news items. (might just be me but the minute the guys face popped up I immediately thought he looked like an Iraqi cleric...then I heard the instigators... Is it just me? or have I been watching too much news today?)

Exactly..."clean, close, smooth shave". To be honest, the 'modern man' was a buddy of mine who I thought had a screen prescense But the day of the shoot, he seemed to have gotten shy in front of the camera and all the crew/lighting. I think its the weakest link, and unfortuantly its what the spot finishes on.

As for the instigator, interesting remark you made. I've had people say "he looks like edward norton" and other say "it's the best shot from the piece".

Thanks guys for all the feedback thus far!
