Gigabit Network Solutions for editing/back-up

Running an experiment shortly - we have a couple of edius systems but due to lots of on-going work and hard drive expansion I want to try something over a network to a NAS; centralise things a bit more.

Now - I fully expect that I won't be able to edit HD over this thing (maxiumum 2/3 users) - but does anyone have any experience of setting something up like this?

At the very least I would like to use the NAS for back-ups from both edius machines to centralise the back-up and ultimately edit from one store.

Anyone any real-world tests in this area? Or have you got to move to fibre-optic.

Thanks.

I use freenas. I installed it on an old amd xp computer i had. I use it over a gigabit network. I have 2 500 seagate drive in it. I can edit dvcprohd in vegas by dragging the mxf on the timeline from directly from the file server. It works well with 720 24pn. But then its just one user. You could setup a raid array....anyway just try it on an old computer, its free.here

i had some free time so i put a flash file on my web server were you can see me dragging the file in vegas and see the frame rate at full resoluton playback. I dropped a few frames because of the screen capture sofware running at the same time.
Cheers.
edit over nas

We regularly edit HD content (1080-30p) over a gigabit network. The files live on custom box with a fast a hardware RAID card, and it works reasonably well (with one user editing HD). It does stutter occasionally, but the renders are fine.

Got Naslite USB up and running, will report back how it all runs this week.

(tried freenas, but Naslite seemed easier to set-up)

A true backup should be offsite. I use the enclosure below to transfer files from DV rack to my Avid system. Once my AVID import is done the disk drive goes offsite for safe keeping. I also upload my project files to my website for safe keeping.

If I had a fire or other total loss scenerio I should be able to rebuild my NLE, re-import all the footage, and restore the project file from the web. A true backup solution needs to be holistic.

re: bob - yeah my office is seperate from house - so intend to isolate the NAS.

Only thing that concerns me really is my knowledge of linux/HFS is non-existent and if I got into a fix and I needed to rebuild the back-up I would be concerned I couldn't just plug it into a windows system so easily. Although I assume windows can read HFS...

Oh and some very rough testing suggested the system (which doesn't have the fastest drives in yet) could shift (by file transfer) approx 1GB per minute (16MB/s : 128Mb/s) - but that was a mix of regular data files - rather than huge video clips.
