Ghost In The Shell & Mimicking Anamorphic features with the GH2.

I tried to capture the atmosphere of a montage from Ghost In The Shell with the GH2, the Voigtlander and some Russian lenses. I added a vertically smeared UV filter and a fishing line on top of most of the lenses during night-time shooting to create the flares.

Take a good look at the second half especially and please tell me if you think it worked with the flares or if it was overkill, thanks.

Wow I really liked this. The shots had just the right style of for Ghost in the Shell, good work!
As for the last part, I would say that the flares were a bit over the top but then again I don't usually like large lens flares so maybe its just a personal thing *shrugs shoulders*

Edit: I must say the music was a big part of why I liked this video.

That was very cool, the music really went well with the shots. I loved the lens flares! I definitely don't think it was overkill. Would you mind posting a picture or two of how you rigged up the fishing line on the lenses?

Nice work!

Thanks, really appreciate it! I usually went by a very simple set up for the fishing line by attaching it on-top of a 77mm UV filter -- though the problem with the fishing line is that it won't work on more wide lenses(such as the Voigtlander 25mm). Which is why I had to carefully smear the glass on the UV filter vertically to achieve the effect on more wide lenses.

Awesome, thanks for the info! I'm going to have to give this a try, it's a cool effect. How did you smear the UV filter? Just run your finger over it?

Yup! Just by running your finger over it. That's why I bought some cheap UV filters as well, so I don't mess up the lenses. :-)

you can do it with your finger. You can also take sand paper and run it along the surface of a filter. Try it on your camera phone! The trick is going to be making sure they are perfectly vertical. Cause otherwise you get slightly crooked flares.

The problem with using the filter is that you get the reflections along with the flares, which you don't see with anamorphics.

The reflections can and most likely will become a problem, the UV filter used is a cheap one from DealExtreme so I guess the bad optical quality could affect it as well. The reflections are usually visible with anamorphics as well, the big difference is just that it is elliptical which gives it a look that adds to the flare effect.

And thanks, Edwin. Your version in Hong Kong is amazing, you are a very lucky filmmaker to live in such an interesting place!

Some very nice shots there. Has anybody tried using a metal wire? When it's not transparent, I'd guess the flare could possibly show only briefly from certain angle. Another alternative could be to make the fishing line less transparent somehow to lessen the effect.

Thanks and about the metal wire there is no flare created only a partially visible dark spot, the flare is usually caused by a reflective material. I do believe the best way to create it is by a tiny glass piece/rod that is being carefully modified to look like the flares you see in lenses such as the Russian Lomo's. It is however what one could call going a little bit far... :-)
