Ghetto 7D Rig

Ok, maybe not ghetto, but cheap lol.

Cause I'm a broke-ass student that can just afford a 7D with a single prime lens, I naturally become jealous when I saw this monstrosity:

Since I am new to the madness that is DSLRs, I ask a favour of all the veterans of the DSLR community: build the cheapest, yet decent, 7D rig possible. Rig must include shoulder mount, follow focus, matte box, LCD hood, microphone, battery (and anything else you can think of that you think would be a good addition to a 7D rig).

I'm not saying I can buy it all, but I'm really curious to see what kind of rigs people will be able to come up with

So if you're bored out of your mind, and feel like killing some time, I would love to see what kind of rigs you guys can spin together! :dankk2:

That kit is in the 1-2 thousand dollar range. I wouldn't call that cheap, considering that plus the cost of the camera can get you a real camera with the same ergonomics.

Pssst... Embed it. Pass it on...

The rig from your link looks to cost twice the price of the camera by itself.
It sems that some are more interested to look good behind the best chariot in town or the reddest car on the block. Of course, you can have the poor man's RED camera: the plastic fantastic red tinted GH1 ....

There are some overblown rigs with colour coded screws, zillions of wires coming in out of the camera, just to look like Panavised Sonys and to impress corporate clients.

There was a time when folk (Bresson, Truffaut, Godard, Kubrick) made movies with a humble Super Parvo, Cameflex, Arri 2B...

Don't be jealous, do your stuff, with the God given primes you scavenged so far. A well told story is more important than than the hero shots behind the coolest rig in town.

Please don't jump flaming, and trolling me. I own a GH1, I think it's a great camera for what you pay at the moment, it has its own niche market before the bigger boys come to play. My first attempt with the little bugger(kit lens, and polariser) is for a video piece I did (part of longer project) that can be seen here:

More to come, I will not sell the camera yet... I even have a great rig in development. LOL.

I mentioned that I own a GH1, posting in the 'wrong' forum.
Don't worry! The stills were done with a EOS 1D3, and from what I heard (not from rumour forums) the 1D4 is going to be a screamer.
About time.

Anyone used the IDC Photography stuff for the 5D? They've not brought out their stuff for the 7D yet, but I'm sure it'll come soon, and at a fraction of the cost of the Zacuto lot it makes me extremely curious whether it holds up.

If you are a no budget filmmaker, the item I would absolutely recommend above all other (once you have the camera, lens, and CF card) is a monopod. You can get a monopod with decent construction for under $40. It won't suit all of your needs but it is cheap and very effective for a lot of work that single man indie shoots often need.
