GH5s? New low light monster?

Not to add something more to the list, but I am tired of seeing Low Light and DR comparisons of internal GH5s vs internal A7S2. This will clearly give the GH5s a large advantage because of the codec.

I'd be more interested in a sensor level comparison. External Atomos recording GH5s vs A7S2. In order to compare not codecs, but actual sensor and noise processing performance between the two.

That will still put the GH5S a long way ahead, as the a7Smk2 can't output 10bit!

While the GH5S can do 4K 60fps 10bit external, while the a7Smk2 can't do 4K 60fps in any form and in any way at all.

Dan, if you have one, could you check to see if the 240fps mode works with an SDXC UHS-I Class 10 95MB/s card? I have three of these already and it would be nice if they could be used for everything outside of the All-I codecs. Thanks!

Panasonic FINALLY delivered a GH5S to me today, it took them forever. Still plan on shooting some tests for you guys per the requests on this page and the last. If anything new has cropped up since this thread that you haven't seen in other tests, let me know. Theyre loaning it to me for a month so I hope to put it to work on at least 3-4 real shoots for clients, probably as B-camera or BTS camera. I will definitely shoot some side by side with the C200.

Thanks for taking requests Dan! Very generous. I would love to see side by side skin tone in both indoor tungsten and outdoor daylight with GH5, GH5s, and C200 would be great! Here's the harder part: It would be great to have the same lens used! I know you're laughing out loud now. I know it prob won't happen, but the amount of color variation between lenses is always a rude awakening to me so it would make a pretty significant difference in any side by side.

In any case, again thanks for the efforts!

I'll see what I can do. I requested a V90 card, which they said they were shipping but it appears to be a Sandisk Extreme Pro, which is a UHS 3 Class 10 card? The camera also has firmware 1.0, not sure if there is an updated version? I'll have to check.

Hi Oz:

1. I will shoot side by side skin tone with the GH5S and the C200. I don't have a GH5 to throw into the mix. Exterior might be a challenge for the GH5S. I have good ND filters but not sure if I have 62-67mm step up ring to get these onto this Leica (my NDs are 67mm). I don't miss not having internal ND filters.
2 . They shipped me the Leica 12-60 2.8 and I don't have a Canon EF to M43 Speedbooster or adapter for my Canon lenses. Sad, I still have my Nikon F to M43 Speedbooster but I sold all of my Nikon lenses off. Sorry, not going to buy an adapter/speedbooster just for a test. Closest Canon lens I have for the C200 will be the 17-55 2.8 IS.

I'll do my best with what I have.

puredrifting's weekend is shot (no pun intended). lol. :2vrolijk_08:
Unfortunately it's SuperBowl Sunday, wife will kill me if I miss a SuperBowl party to shoot camera tests. It may take me a week or two to find the time in the schedule to play with camera comparisons. But I will get there. I am scheduling some interviews for our documentaries, will be able to use this GH5S as a B-camera for our C200 on real shoots, camera tests kind of bore me but I'll see what I can do for you guys as you do need tests for analytical comparison.

Football is life. Been watching the pregame show for the last few hours. Lots of interesting production/lighting.

One thing that caught my eye is super shallow depth-of-field interviews with a higher shutter speed. When the people are animated and move their head/mouth/hands, the movements are a bit jerky. It looks good. Not sure if the particular one I saw (or at least that specific part) with Brady/Dan Patrick was on purpose as you can tell lighting was very strong. Maybe just in my head but looked like a high shutter speed was used.

Got it! Thanks again.

Oh, and real world B-cam usage is actually really valuable to see so I'm looking forward to that.

There are reports coming in from early GH5s users and those scrutinizing GH5s original downloaded footage of softness (lack of detail) that just isn't good. Also, rumors are running rampant from camera distributors that Panasonic is planning on a considerable price reduction (from 15% to as much as 40%) on the GH5s in March or April. I haven't personally reviewed footage from the GH5s other than a few Youtube offerings. It will be interesting to see what the general consensus is after a month or two...

Rumors of price reduction are eyebrow-raising to me, too. From what I've read, the degree of the discount (if any) will depend on early sales performance, or lack thereof. Of course, these are only rumors at this point...

So, there are reports and rampant rumors, but when I try to creatively google to find such things, I can't find anything regarding this. While this is interesting, what is the source of these statements?

Well, Vitaliy Kiselev (original master hacker of the GH2) mentioned this on his forum. Not sure of his sources. I'm not dogmatic about any of these rumors, either. I'm just reporting what I've gleaned from another forum and thought it post-worthy. After viewing more GH5s footage, I'm not necessarily seeing on my monitor the softness issue some are complaining about. Time and testing will tell. Link here if interested.

I just did a test and found the image from the GH5S compared to the GH5 to be so close to the same with the natural profile. At a 100% crop it looked like the GH5 was a smidge and I mean really slightly sharper but detail seems a tad and again so slightly better on the GH5S.

I used one push AF to get focus with both cameras in the same positon.

This is chart shooting so with real-world shooting it could be different.

That's encouraging to hear for those of us considering the GH5s. I'm curious Erik, have you found the autofocus noticeably better on the GH5s vis-a-vis the GH5?

Eric - would love to see GH5s/EVA1 comparison if you get time, I'm sure i saw you post previously that your a EVA owner?

It's interesting the camera is in stock everywhere though. The GH5 was unavailable for a while here and there, and kept coming and going.

Maybe Panasonic oversupplied in preparation for the demand.
