GH5s? New low light monster?

Can you post a link ? ...I have not seen it verified anywhere.

At 1:29 mark in this video you can see VLog-L indicated on the GH5s’ LCD.

We should know a lot more once the GH5s firmware is finished ( currently it's at version 0.2 ) and the camera is finally released for anyone to test, which sounds like end of February or early March 2018.

One of my Dealers stated they expect to start filling orders on February 5th.

Still on the fence whether I’m buying one, or just picking up another GH5. Would hate to lose IBIS, but the majority of my work is on Sticks, so IF there is a dramatic increase in useable dynamic range I’ll likely go with the new camera, & reserve the original for handheld (without a rig), & stills.

Yes it works when shooting V-log. Thats one of the main advantages of the GH5s over the GH5. Not so much just for shooting in the dark but you can shoot V-log at ISO 2500 with the same roughly clean look as V-log at ISO 400 which is just under a 3 stop improvement. This opens up a couple of possibilities:

1. You can shoot indoors with a f5.6 zoom for the same roughly noise quality and dynamic range for a prime lens shooting at f2.2. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities using zoom lenses in tough situations where with the Gh5 you almost always had to use primes or extremely expensive zoom lenses with a very limited zoom range. The f2.8 zooms can be as clean as a theoretical f1.1 zoom lens.

2. You can shoot 3x slow motion with roughly the same noise quality as regular motion on the GH5. Slow motion in poor indoor lighting is now somewhat possible.

3. You can use less output LED lights 3 stops lower on an indoor set which means cheaper, smaller and lighter light kits.

4. You can shoot a production outdoors at ISO 400 and indoors at ISO 2500 with the same lenses and aperture for a consistent look throughout the production. Every lens looks different at different aperture amounts. F1.4 will never look the same as f4.0 so just adjusting aperture will never deliver consistent results. One solution is to use a boatload of ND filtering outside so you can keep the lens as the same aperture as you would use indoors. That only works if you use the lenses wide open or if you use a ton of light indoors. A wide open lens is never as good as when stopped down a bit and every lens has a sweet spot. FF lenses tend to have a sweet spot around f4-f5.6. Dual native ISO means it is now much easier to target the same sweet spot aperture on a production without a massive light kit.

5. You can use a lot more diffusion on lights to help soften them. Smaller LED lights create more of a harsh light. The more the lights are diffused the weaker the output. ISO 2500 means you can diffuse the daylights out of those lights to get very soft lighting without an impact on the quality.

Dual native ISO is not just a means to suck in more light to shoot in the dark. It is a highly advanced tool that can and should be leveraged to rethink how one shoots in different environments. It really is a game changer. ISO 2500 doesn't mean no longer having to use lights for production value but it means smaller more agile lights can be used that take minutes to setup vs hours. There are a slew of affordable LED panel lights out there now with CRI 97+ accuracy, dimmable and color temp adjustable for under $100 or $200. They don't have the massive output of traditional lights or even a Dracast LED but with 2500 ISO these lights become a more realistic option.

Thanks for your reply. Great stuff in this little camera.

I may have a GH5S in hand soon like this week or next week. Anything you guys want me to test/shoot that you have not yet seen from other Vloggers or writers that is reasonably simple and not super time-consuming, I may only have it for a couple of days. It will probably just be with a Panasonic kit lens.

Cool Dan, thanks.

Some normal interview style lighting, night shots and some exteriors if you had time would be great.

Thanks!

I would like to know more about the 240fps mode. I heard there was a crop involved. Your opinion about the quality of the footage would be valuable. Right now I use a Sony RX10 II for 240fps and can justify the upgrade if the footage is an improvement. The noise characteristics on the GH5s are setting it up to be a great high shutter camera.

Thanks.

Your impression of the DR, however subjective that may be...though it's not been officially rated I would appreciate your thoughts....I know you shoot on a C200, which is 13 ? stops if I remember correctly, and you've shot on the LT...I may be off here!

All good suggestions guys, I'll see what I can do. From what I have seen out on the GH5S already, the 240 fps is cropped and is of lower quality. Probably kind of like the 120 fps on the C200, it's okay, but not great, but at least it's not cropped, it's just soft. I don't have any DR measurement charts/tools but I do have an old fashioned Kodak gray scale chart from my film days I could shoot so we might be able to extrapolate a bit as far as DR. I will be really surprised if it is more than 12 stops, based upon what the camera's engineer told me. We'll see if Panasonic comes through, I've been hammering them for a month now to get me a copy to review but I'm not a Vlogger so I am low down the priority list, the biggest audience for a camera like this is Vloggers and YouTubers.

From another test video: the GH5s HFR crops the image at speeds higher than 180 fps. So no crop up to 180 fps.

Can you shoot the same scene with your C200 in RAW, so we will have something to compare the GH5s LOG image to ?

Any scene will work, just shoot it well exposed, overexposed by 4 stops, and underexposed by 4 stops. Do the same with any other camera people are used to working with (GH5 or C200 will do), and we'll dissect DR and sharpness here :)

Panasonic FINALLY delivered a GH5S to me today, it took them forever. Still plan on shooting some tests for you guys per the requests on this page and the last. If anything new has cropped up since this thread that you haven't seen in other tests, let me know. Theyre loaning it to me for a month so I hope to put it to work on at least 3-4 real shoots for clients, probably as B-camera or BTS camera. I will definitely shoot some side by side with the C200.

Thank you.
Ergonomics, low light performance, auto focus performance, approximate dynamic range, "cinematic" looks, ability and/or ease to match the colors and overall looks to those by Canon.

Great!

A comparison with the C200 for DR, color, low light sensitivity and skin tones would be awesome!

Please test also 8bit vs 10bit internal recording differences (banding, posterization?) and moire/aliasing at 1080p high speed (60p 120p 240p)...

Thanks a LOT ! ! ! !
