GH5s? New low light monster?

The shot at 49sec doesn't look like 14 stops. If it has any more DR compared to the GH5 it's going to be in the shadows.

Correction: @ 2 minutes, ProAV claims that Panasonic is claiming "14 stops of DR":

Whoa. Any official confirmation? I am surprised this isn't the highlighted feature everywhere, if true. On the other hand, Kai (yeah, I know) claims in his review NO DR improvement... so...

If true, it's an odd scenario to be in: Basically an EVA1 with better lowlight and equivalent DR, the huge bonus of 4K 10:2:2 60p, better menus, but just resolving less detail?

due to the massively cleaner ISO it makes sense that the DR may "seem" higher since the shadows are a lot cleaner at ISO 400 and up to ISO 6400. The GH5s can likely grade into the shadows a heck of a lot more.

Am I the only one noticing an improvement in skin tones on the GH5s? It sounds like it's supposed to be the same color science, but the skin tones look more pleasing to my eye in a couple of the comparison vids I've watched...

Skin tones look significantly different in this vid, I wonder if he used different picture profiles?

If they did in fact improve the color science as it affects skin tones, I think that's a big win for the GH5s. I'm still using a GH4 as a B cam but definitely looking to upgrade to the 5 or 5s this year.

To me, the AF on the GH5 is so poor that it is not an option for handheld or Gimbal work. So for Panasonic to refer to it as the "handheld" version is a little over the top for me. Even without IBIS I really hope "tweaked" AF on the GH5s translates to usable or working up to modern standards.

When I spoke with the Panasonic engineers a few weeks ago at the sneak peek I was at, they confirmed that no, the GH5S doesn't have phase detection AF, that they did tweak the algorithim from the GH5 and the GH5S offers a bit better AF performance but it's not going to Canon DPAF level for sure.

Imaging-Resource.com : GH5s Review

At both 12,800 and 25,600, the GH5S looks slightly better than the A7S II at the same ISOs, which is both unexpected and subjectively highly impressive for a camera featuring a sensor that is a fraction the size of the other.

A sensor significantly smaller than the full-frame A7S II is beating that camera in low-light performance. I never thought I would see the day. With these test results, it's hard to argue that the GH5S is not the new king of low light.

I think this new GH5s is meant to be an EVA1 B-roll camera with it's timecode IN/OUT and DUAL NATIVE ISO feature. It would not surprise me if Panasonic sells the EVA1 with the GH5s as a cine package.

You'd be surprised, there is not a whole lot of communctionan and synergy between the consumer group and broadcast group at Panasonic. There is some, but basically both divisions do what they want and have separate and distinct business goals. I doubt if you'll see the two offered in a package as the dealer network and marketing infrastructure for the two is completely different, but who knows? A dealer who carries both could market them as a package but I doubt you'll see the mothership do that.

At the sneak peek I saw a month ago, Panasonic claimed 12+ stops, period. 14 stops is a folk tale.

Two other bits of GH5s info that I read in GH5s reviews...

- 25 percent reduction in rolling-shutter over the GH5.

- Better built-in microphones because they don't have to compensate for IBIS noise.

I was shown 4K comparison footage on a 60" 4K display, shot around Osaka at night between the A7S II, the GH5 and the GH5S. I was blown away frankly at how much better the GH5S footage looked than the GH5 (noticeable) and the A7S II (looked really grainy and gritty in comparison). I was amazed at the performance they are getting from this new sensor, ironically produced by Sony.

The GH5S footage has better color science than the GH4 (IMHO, as an early adopter, the GH4 had really bad color science) and the GH5 (I agree, based upon the side by side tests, the GH5S has better skin tones).

I don't care about IBIS but to me, the Achilles Heel of the camera is the meh AF. I love shooting on gimbals but the AF performance I experienced would make gimbal use difficult. It was an impressive camera for the money and I think it will be a great small form factor camera. If I was investing my own money, I still feel the Fujinon XT-2, overall, is a better value but the GH5S is not bad at all. The time code hack is cool and works although the implementation with the PC port is a little wonky. I think Panasonic is really trying hard to regain their broadcast/prosumer business and the EVA-1 and GH5S both show an admirable amount of wanting to please the potential buying audience. You can't give everyone everything but both show that they are listening and responding much more so than Sony or Canon.

I think Panasonic would really do themselves a favor by working with Zhiyun to get the Crane 2's follow focus working with the GH series. Gh5s + Lumix 12-35 and the Crane 2 would be a killer combo.

I'm kind of torn. IBIS helps gimbal work a lot, but so does AF and better skin tones is always a plus.

Couldn't agree more, that would be a killer feature.

I had a very brief experience using the IBIS on a GH5 I rented...I thought it worked well when using Dual I.S. with a compatible lens, but for some reason I found it to be funky when using a manual 12mm prime. Even when I had it on a gimbal I thought it was jumping around and doing odd and unexpected things. Not sure what I was doing wrong. So for now, IBIS isn't a requirement for me. Happy to sacrifice that for the low light and color tweaks on the gh5s.

In retrospect,
A7s sensor was 2014. Its been almost 4 yrs! I guess its worth to see how the a7s3 would fare with a new sensor

Doesnt take a genius to tell a difference in DR side by side

...But you have to know exactly what you are doing to correctly set-up a camera for testing. I've seen some professional shooters screw-up simply because they got one thing wrong, which ruined the results of the test. Looking at other GH5s reviews, nobody is getting Kai's results, so I seriously think he screwed-up his testing.
