GH5s? New low light monster?

Personally I don't care if it's real or not....if you need more DR or low light performance than the GH5, add some lights...I'm so impressed with mine, my next purchase will be the Varicam LT....for me the open gate anamorphic, IBIS and exposure tools meet all my needs...AF is not one of them, and we've not encountered a single day of shooting yet where 12 stops of DR was insufficient...but of course everybody's needs differ...now an Anamorphic lens would have been my joy announcement!

All will be revealed in just a few hours. This thread and the speculation has been very entertaining. It can't be all things to all people but many will be impressed.

To me, the AF on the GH5 is so poor that it is not an option for handheld or Gimbal work. So for Panasonic to refer to it as the "handheld" version is a little over the top for me. Even without IBIS I really hope "tweaked" AF on the GH5s translates to usable or working up to modern standards.

I think this new GH5s is meant to be an EVA1 B-roll camera with it's timecode IN/OUT and DUAL NATIVE ISO feature. It would not surprise me if Panasonic sells the EVA1 with the GH5s as a cine package.

Sadly, I won't be swapping my GH5 out for the new model, nor adding the new model. I need IBIS for my work that requires a compact camera, and if I were going to spend $2500 for a second cam with higher specs that would become the new A Cam, I'd probably just keep saving and add a proper cinema cam, namely the EVA1 or a used FS7.

I had been wondering how the battery life compares to the GH5. My GH5 uses up batteries significantly faster than my old GH4 ever did. But from what i have seen so far in the video reviews, battery life is essentially the same, maybe slightly better for the GH5S due to the lack of in-body stabilization. The new camera is also slightly lighter.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but one new feature that I like is the ability to select LINE or MIC input, instead of just MIC.

Correction: @ 2 minutes, ProAV claims that Panasonic is claiming "14 stops of DR":

Whoa. Any official confirmation? I am surprised this isn't the highlighted feature everywhere, if true. On the other hand, Kai (yeah, I know) claims in his review NO DR improvement... so...

If true, it's an odd scenario to be in: Basically an EVA1 with better lowlight and equivalent DR, the huge bonus of 4K 10:2:2 60p, better menus, but just resolving less detail?

I don't see that level of difference in the comparison clips in the videos that feature both GHs and GH5 side by side, at least in terms of rolloff. Hard to compare without ungraded LOG files, but ...

I'd be cautious with the DR numbers. I don't trust the numbers, because a claim can be made like 12 or 14 or 15 or whatnot, but then when it comes down to usage, all of a sudden you start hearing about "usable" DR being a different number, and all kinds of qualifiers about DR at various ISO levels and in the end the DR number is far less "objective" as to what you'll get without a lot of trial and error. So you can have both the camera makers reporting an "higher" DR number, and a user not being able to notice any difference at all.

To me, the low light capability is far more important. I don't care as much about IBIS, but agree that AF is important, otherwise your use of gimbals is going to be limited. Overall, I think this is pretty neat, though I really do wish they'd hit the AF out of the ballpark, that would be a game changer.

Half excited, half annoyed, lol.

So - the GH5s has very noticeably BETTER lowlight than the EVA1:

Yup. Much better. (Dual ISO on GH5s is actually a stop better... 400/2500 vs EVA1 800/2500), and however that breaks down, cleaner ISO 3200/6400 over EVA1 clearly shows here. Not even close.

So as a midrange (read: no Varicam) Panasonic user, we have our lowlight beast which is ironically a GH5s (besting the 3x more expensive EVA1), our handheld/run'n'gun machine in the GH5 with the IBIS, and our overall A-camera in the EVA-1.

I read a few things on the loss of IBIS in the GH5s: I read that it was due to the excessive heat the Starvis sensor may be putting out, making the IBIS mechanism untennable. I also read it was "feedback" from pro users regarding making the camera better suited to being on rails, mounts, etc. where vibrations interfere with the IBIS mechanism (I have a hard time buying this one??).

I have seen nothing so far about a DR increase, so I am guessing that is consistent. So basically, we trade IBIS for 4k/60p 4:2:2 10-bit, TC in/out, and Dual ISO (two features not even the EVA1 has).

Even if the dynamic range is still 12 stops the Dual ISO means we still get 12 stops at ISO 2500 vs the 9-10 stops cameras suffer from when raising the ISO. This means that indoors in low light the dynamic range of the GH5s likely spanks any other DSLR out there since we still have a high DR. DR drops pretty quickly at high ISO levels.
