Hello

doing a shoot these days with my GH5s in HD All-Intra 200mbps
I wanted to convert those into low files DNX36 with LUT to give to the editor, and when I try to import the files in DaVinci resolve (free) I only get audio .. ??

I can play the files with VLC flawlessly
and the other camera (blackmagic ursa mini pro) is recognized with no problem

any clues ?

thanks !

The free version of Resolve does import the 10-bit ProRes and Raw files from BM Pocket and Micro Cinema Cameras, as this is what is provided with the lower end BM cameras.

But the full version at $299 is a super bargain, competitive with FCPX and less than PP, not bad for a program that started out as a $10K then made available by BM for $995, until the recent drop to $299 formthr new Pro edition.
Cheers

But your Ursa Mini Pro should have come with a dongle or license code for the full version of Resolve.

well, you might guess that if I'm not using it, it must be for a reason. Then I don't really understand why you would answer this.

but since I need to explain something totally irrelevant :
I left the dongle in my office in another city, I'm travelling and wanted to use a friend's iMac to gain time by doing those transcoding each day during the shoot

That's the best part about owning the dongle version of Resolve, being able to use it on any Mac or Windows computer just by plugging in the dongle.

didn't know that,
but isn't my Ursa mini Pro pictures supposed to be in 10 bits as well ?

10bit ProRes files have always been supported. what isn't supposed in the free version of Resolve is the odd form of 10bit h.264 that Panasonic uses. Many different formats can be 8bit or 10bit.

Fusion also doesn't work with the 10bit files from the GH5 which is extremely annoying.

very sad to hear it...and weird ! so I can read RED RAW files but not GH5 files ! interesting choice from Blackmagic.
anyway in the future I'll always keep the dongle with me

The 12.5 free version does support the files from the GH5. Make sure it's the 12.5 and not 12.5.1 etc.

Its not an interesting choice. BMD makes cameras that shoot raw and ProRes so naturally they are going to support the formats their cameras shoot. RED raw is different but still raw and I believe RED makes their own codecs to assist NLEs in decoding. The 10bit h.264 files on the GH5 are a very odd format to support and it isn't as easy as flipping a switch. BMD has to go out of their way to develop a more optimized way of handling those files. Since the majority of their users are using many other cameras and formats the GH5 is really a drop in the bucket. It costs money to support odd formats.

If you want to blame somebody blame Panasonic for creating an odd format that is difficult to support.

Thanks Thomas, that sorts it for me, and makes sense also.
Cheers

So buy it for $299 then. Thats insanely cheap for what you get. Support the development team and the future updates of the software so it doesn't die.
+1 I am working in it full time now. Get the license. I haven’t paid for an update and they keep coming. I’m also learning Fusion which I am loving right now. The best deal around. Gone, the bloated purple bloodsucker!

True about Fusion and 8 bit. It needs an update but it you’re using Resolve you can work with FusionConnect and render out DPX’s. Oddly it works great with my Dragon footage.
