GH5 GH5S Firmware Update Requests

Might as well move on this....
This cam is a beast, but needs its "S" version menu updated. It seems as though it was just a copy of gh5 menu.

I notice there is no "Shoot wo Lens" coming from gh4, is this no longer a thing.

I have seen a few instances where my iso/wb changes are not seen until i hit rec or ex telephoto(assigned fn1). And yes I have constant preview "On". I have been trying to recreate the issue, but its only happened a few times over the past few nights.

Im sure ill think of other things as they come up, but other than that so far Im just floored with the image/color/lowlight... Its absolutely killer!!!

Does the 5s offer framing guides? 1.85, 2.35, 2.39, etc?

That'd make for a good Firmware request. Especially since this model seems specifically geared towards filmmakers.

I heard it was going to offer the guides, so your request has been answered!

Ok, here is my list of wants:

-Need False Color. I really would love this as an option. Shouldn't be too difficult from a technical perspective.
-Option for HDMI output to support > 60fps for 1080p video so we can output VFR footage to external recorders. This may be more difficult or possibly have a hardware limitation, but the quality of the internal footage really suffers when using VFR over 120fps.
-Histogram isn't available when using waveforms. I know it's redundant, but I like having both.

Got my GH5s only recently, so I will have to get back with a list of requests a bit later, but there is one significant issue which must be addressed.

Panasonic, please fix the dancing horizontal lines noise when shooting VFR over 60fps.
Has been already discussed here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?358985-GH5S-Noise, here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?359157-really-weird-noise-when-doing-VFR-on-GH5s-!!! and shown very well in nobbystylus's video here https://vimeo.com/264950067).

A real shame that the premium "s" model with the supposed to be superior VFR capabilities suffers from this, while the regular GH5 with weaker speeds and ISO performance shows cleaner image in this mode.

Another disappointment is the more pronounced aliasing I see in VFR when shooting over 100fps. Here again the regular GH5 shows a superior VFR image at 120fps and though I still need to verify it, my impression is this is true even at 180fps.

I would like to see 1080p HD VFR 10-bit 422 for fps between 30-60. 36, 42, 48, etc. For some reason you can do 10-bit 422 in 60p, and 24/30p, but no VFR mode. Only HD 8-bit VFR.

Dial locking.

We need to be able to lock the dials if recording

Why the G9 has this and not the GH5 / GH5s. I have no idea

Just like most Sony and Panasonic camcorders I would like to see the parameters for iris, shutter speed and gain ALL the time whether set manually or auto. Nice little A next to them if the camera is controlling and again like the camcorders what the exposure compensation is set to as well. Also it would be nice to have smooth parameter changes when recording. That is if any parameter is changed have the change take place smoothly not abruptly. This can be a menu selection to use smooth change or not. By default this happens with auto gain/iso and would like to do this manually while recording and have the change take place smoothly. Again this is something my Sony camcorders can do.

I'd like to see firmware improvements of the GH5s timecode feature.

I haven't used it myself, but reviews that I have read of the GH5s timecode support have noted that the camera's clock is not accurate enough to maintain sync long-term. When synced to another device with a better clock, GH5s timecode may start to drift after about 40 minutes. If you want accurate timecode you'll need to jam sync every half hour. To me that sounds like a feature that barely works. If a timecode source remains connected during the entire shoot (e.g., Tentacle Sync), I would hope that in a firmware update Panasonic might be able to periodically auto sync without the user having to constantly nurse the GH5s back into sync.

I may be wrong but I think that is a downside to the method used and not unique to just the GH5S.

Yes, that is an issue with jam sync, the camera clocks drift after a while on long takes greater than 30-60 min.
Even the AF100 would drift after being jam sync’d..
Cheers

Panasonic has decided to hide automatic exposure parameters the camera chooses. Why, we dont know?

I'll await the user reports from the field before updating the firmware. GH5 V2.2 lost 2160p60 HLG capability in V2.0. For the GH5s; with HLG confirmed by EBU to have 14.6 stops DR, I would hold off updating until it can be confirmed it isn't restricted to 80% IRE like V-Log/L.

That has been there for forever.

I don't know what your definition of forever is, but it's only been available since they added ProRes RAW at NAB. Anyhow, thanks for your snootiness - it is much appreciated by everyone here, I'm sure.

AtomOS 8.4 firmware update in October of 2017 offered HLG support from the GH5

Not being snooty here. I',m only snooty on EOSHD. When I hang out with the pros, I mind my manners.
