GH4 GH5 resolution from Photokina PR doesn't make sense with current MFT sensors?

The specifications posted on the Panasonic UK site do mention the resolutions for the 6K Photo mode:
https://www.panasonic.com/uk/consum...ix-g-compact-system-cameras/dc-gh5.specs.html

  • 4:3 5184x3888(L) / 3712x2784(M) / 2624x1968(S) / 4992x3744(6K PHOTO) / 3328x2496(4K PHOTO)
  • 3:2 5184x3456(L) / 3712x2480(M) / 2624x1752(S) / 5184x3456(6K PHOTO) / 3504x2336(4K PHOTO)
  • 16:9 5184x2920(L) / 3840x2160(M) / 1920x1080(S) / 3840x2160(4K PHOTO)
  • 1:1 3888x3888(L) / 2784x2784(M) / 1968x1968(S) / 2880x2880(4K PHOTO)

I suppose if you were to shoot with 1.33X anamorphic lenses in the 4:3 aspect ratio in 6K PHOTO mode, then after desqueezing the footage you could end up with an output resolution of 6656 x 3744. Which is a 16:9 aspect ratio frame of a bit more than 6K even. Although I'm not sure this is what Panasonic's marketing department had in mind.

One other thing to note about the above list, is that in the 4:3 and 3:2 aspect ratios, the 4K PHOTO modes don't really result in frames that are close to 4000+ pixels across either. And the output frame sizes of the 6K PHOTO mode are about 1.5x those of the 4K PHOTO mode. So perhaps there is some semblance of internal consistency in the naming for whatever that is worth.

It's really very simple: the only thing that makes "4K Photo" or "6K Photo" 4K or 6K is the total pixel count of the resultant 4:3 or 3:2 frame (or 16:9 and 1:1 as well for 4K Photo) - 8.3MP and 18.7MP (though the 3:2 6K Photo comes up a bit short at 17.9MP due to the 5184 px width. The "6000x3000" thingy tha has thrown so many isimply gives an approximation of the ~18MP 6K frame total that the different AR's must meet. I've got to think that something was lost in translating the original Japanese to English leading to the confusion.

My post was unnecessarily snarky. This 6k photo option is actually a pretty cool feature and I'm glad that Panasonic is offering it. I'll just ignore how they named it.

Matt Fraser is talking about the "confusing" 6K photo mode, starting about 1:20 in.
