GH4 GH5 Owner / User Reports

Doesn't the 18-35 vignette on the XL at 18?

Slightly OT...

When I briefly tested the EF-mount 18-35mm & Speedbooster Ultra on the GH4 I found the combination was fine for video, but vignette the 4:3 stills. Since I use the GH system for both of it's hybrid capabilities I ended up returning the lens.

I ran a test on the battery life of the GH5; Setup was 4K/24 @ 8 bit, tripod mounted, LCD screen on using a 12-35 lens with OIS turned off. This is a pretty common setup that I use for events. At 1:56 the low battery indicator began to blink and at 2:02 the camera shut down. The battery was new, freshly charged, taken out of the charger about 10 minutes before I began shooting.

While a 2 hour window works for most of the type of events I cover there are some that will require a battery change in the middle of the event. Looks like I will have to stagger a battery change between my A and B camera for some shoots.

Is the Battery Grip out of the question? AFAIK it still has the goofy system of one battery in the camera, & another in the grip, but it would at least double the runtime. Wonder if the goofy system allows hot-swapping batteries?

Someone mentioned that there was a way to hot swap, but I don't understand how that would work since the battery grip is in the way of the internal battery.

You have the option of using the DC input adapter and using external batteries or the AC adapter and plugging in the wall.

So it might be worthwhile picking up the GH5 battery grip. ( I occasionally film live events that are over 2 hours )

I think the idea is that you set up the camera to run off the battery grip and fall back to the body. Then when the battery grip runs out you just swap it, and the camera goes back to using the battery grip after you put the new battery in. (Caveat: I don't have a battery grip, so I haven't tried this.)

Your right. Here is what the battery grip manual says:

Using 2 batteries

The digital camera can be used for longer periods of time when batteries are inserted in both the digital camera and the battery grip. (It will switch to the other battery when one of he batteries is exhausted.)

•The battery to be used primarily can be set in the digital camera. Read the operating instructions of your digital camera for details

The battery grip would work but I need 2 which makes it a very expensive solution. The A/C adapter would work for some events but not for most outdoor shoots. I will probably opt to stagger a battery replacement, not ideal but I only have a few events a year that need continuous coverage over 1.5 hours. I have been spoiled by the GH4 battery life!

Yeah, 2 hours of battery life is about half of what the GH4 would do isn't it? So the 70%-80% claims seemed a bit exaggerated?

@Jmcadory -- you could always just use your GH4 for those use cases?

It might come to that, I plan to keep them but to my eye the image on the GH5 is so much better! The shiney new thing is hard to put down.

I want to clear up a couple of points for you:

3. This is wrong. I have no issue white balancing in 10bit 4:2:2 mode on any profile. Not sure how you are getting an error message?

Aside from those, the rest seem valid :)

Cheers,

Paul :)

Wow, yeah I'm completely mistaken. I just checked with multiple lenses and sure enough set custom WB is available in all modes. I'm happily wrong here. Thanks for pointing it out! Now I need to go back and check the GH4, haha!

I'm not sure who the heck ever got 4 hours out of a GH4 battery. On my GH3 I could get close to that but I don't even think that camera could get 4 hours.

Somebody recently tested their gh5 as 2.5 hours and 2 hours with the audio adapter and phantom powered mics. That's not bad really when you consider what the heck you are getting out of the camera for two solid hours. That level of 10bit 4k video with 96khz 24bit audio from a dinky battery for two hours really is insanely good.

On the GH4 I need the camera battery, 8 rechargeable AA batteries from the Tascam DR60 and two big Sony batteries for a Flame to get close to that two hours. So yeah I would consider 2 hours really darn good from a tiny brick.

Yeah I think we were just spoiled with the GH4 battery life.

As long as it's not a problem e.g. BMPCC, which it isn't by the sounds of it, then I'm fine with it.

That is remarkable. That would even work with most event recording. Thanks for the info.

I routinely get over 4 hours on the GH4 shooting 4K/24 but that is with the Panasonic batteries. I have a few off brand batteries that only last about 3 1/2 hours.

Me? I haven't done a scientific test, so perhaps this is off slightly, but I'd frequently work just last week in India for the majority of the day before switching batteries. Now, I wasn't RECORDING that whole time, but the camera was on for the majority of it. 4 hours recording on GH4? Maybe not. 4 hours powered on in between recording? Almost definitely.

I think the idle time for the GH5 burns through battery significantly faster than GH4 because I can't get anywhere NEAR that on GH5 before swapping... and if what Paul is saying about IBIS always being on to hold sensor in place, that makes a ton of sense. That means the powered-on state of a GH5 would burn battery at a far higher rate than the powered on but not recording state of the GH4.

Regardless, I subjectively notice a massive difference that is more than 20%. On GH4 even after years my thought was still, even up to last week, "HOW IS THE BATTERY LIFE SO GOOD?" and my thought playing with GH5 this last week was "I already have to switch batteries again?!".

I'm not really complaing since Wasabi batteries are $20/each and I have literally have 10 batteries, so whatever, I am more just pointing out that in my unscientific experience the GH5 seems to eat power about 2x as fast as the GH4 in my use scenarios (which is a mix of active recording, and powered-on idling and/or menu time).

I just bought a Atomos Power Station to power my GH5. Did a quick test and ran it for 3 hours before I gave up and it had only used 1/2 of one of the big L series batteries. I have several events that run pretty much all day so had bought the Power Station for these and I think was worth it now as it can power other things at the same time too as well as change batteries on the fly.
