GH4 GH5 Owner / User Reports

Still better than the GH4, but I would encourage you to evaluate it set higher before blindly slamming it to -5. It's a different class of NR than I've seen in other cameras, and seems integral to how the GH5 works its magic with the small sensor. (Also, remember that the less noise the codec has to to store, the more bandwidth is available for the actual image.)
I second that, presumably the internal noise reduction works much more effective at the channel level or at least before the video is encoded, this has a number of advantages over noise reduction in post.

The new low light and / or noise reduction is pretty incredible. If you set auto iso and go from light to dark environments the speed, smoothness and accuracy of the exposure is incredible. Ohhh for the auto focus to work so well :)

I will concur that you can get away with some incredible things, even up to ISO 6400 on this thing that were not even remotely possible with the GH4. Whether it's the sensor, processing or NR, matters not to me. I'm getting some awesome images with auto ISO that I would never have believed. Haven't tried it in the dark yet, but if the NR works as well when locked down we are going to be well pleased with what we can get from this thing.

I've found another odd behavior. If you switch cards in the slots, it will record the same numbers on the other card and you get two completely different files with the same numbers. This is when it is set to write to slot 1 then switch to slot 2 when #1 is full. Now this morning it is recording to slot 2 with numbers that are already on the card in slot 1. Strange behavior for sure.

Anyone else seen anything like this or do I just have it set up wrong?

Cheers,
Pete

I thought I had seen that you could setup file naming/numbering for the cards. Not sure that it would overrule duplication on the other though.

Joe/Carry, what would you recommend NR settings at then? default 0?
I think that's a personal choice, and also dependent on the job.

For normal every day shooting like weddings, etc. that I record internally and want to do a limited amount of post processing, so far it looks like I'll leave it at zero. For a narrative piece or music video that I shot log on an external recorder, where I know I'm already going to spend a lot of time grading every single shot, then I'll test knocking it down. (I don't have VLOG-L yet.)

Can't really tell as I do not have the GH5 yet.

However listening to the GH5 product manager it seems they already have softened the effect of the noise setting since their found it was misused.

The sun came out for a short time on a rainy day so I tested the IBIS with my Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f/0.95@F2.8 & 5.9" close focus in 4K 60p.

Isn't the color lovely? I started getting excited about this aspect of the GH5 after reading the leaked PDF, and now that I've got my grubby little mitts on it, I find it is so far my favorite improvement over the GH4. Even more so than IBIS and the other "sexy" features that everyone gloms onto.

This is the first GH-series body to squelch my Canon color envy.

Like I said before...I feel like I have a BMD pocket cam with Canon color science.

Haven't read the whole thread, so I apologize if this is redundant, but as someone who owns a gh3 and gh4 but who NEVER uses the EVF on either, I'm really really impressed with the new EVF. GH4 improved upon gh3, but for me was still unusable for any critical work. This thing is totally useable. No need to look around inside to see the different parts of the image while other parts are hidden or blurry. It tracks very quickly, not laggy. Beautiful image. Only thing it needs is a larger 3rd party eyecup to totally block light leak. Otherwise, I can totally see using this in broad daylight for the first time since being part of the GHx party.

Would have been a better test if you also had IBIS off. I say this because I find the results...unimpressive. I can get a smoother, more stable shot even without IBIS. So it's possible the underlying cause of my disappointment is that you're just not very good with handheld shots. Seeing the same shot with IBIS off would have confirmed or belied that theory.

Dang... beautiful colors indeed! Very Fuji-esque. What was the color profile and settings ?

I have nokton 25mm on GH4 and GH5

The IBIS is great on GH5. Gets rid of all micro jitters and keeps things nice and steady for me.

I did not change the default color style for that video so it must be standard. I did change to vivid in the settings while I was playing around indoors today to see the difference.

Can I get some feedback on this manual focus issue. It's really bad on the 12-35mm 2.8 MK II, and not quite as bad, but annoyingly long throw on the 42.5mm 1.2 Nocticron. The 42.5mm rattles badly too, and even when turned on has a lot of play when you shake it lightly. The 7-14mm I bought focuses fine. All are new but the shipping packaging was pretty banged up. The 42.5mm has an AF/M switch on the lens body, which is on M. The camera settings are all set to full manual. The 12-35 has not option to turn the AF off on the lens.

Manual focus fail.
