GH4 GH5 Owner / User Reports

It appears FHD over 28mbps does not record in MP4? Just MOV? Or am I doing something wrong?

Also, it doesn't appear the 10-bit 4:2:2 is available in FHD yet - I think that was coming with the April firmware update?

CORRECTION: FHD 100mbps for 8-bit 4:2:0 is available in MP4 (LPCM) mode

I tested the focus transition feature with some older Lenses:

Panasonic 20mm 1,7 H-H020 Firmware 1.1 Not Available! I hope it can be fixed with an update as this is my favorite native Lens.
Panasonic 14mm 2,5 H-H014 Firmware 1.0 OK
Panasonic 14-42mm 3,5-5,6 H-FS014042 Firmware 1.0 OK
Panasonic 14-42mm 3,5-5,6 H-PS014042 Firmware 1.2 OK

... If you find the h264 compression artifacts objectionable now, you most likely will then. To make a material difference, you're almost certainly going to need to use an external recorder with a different codec.*

*There's always a chance that Panny will surprise us and move to a better codec, but that doesn't seem to be what they have planned based on what they've communicated so far.

Most definitely agree. I shot some 4K footage internal where previously I had just used a Ninja 2 1080p recorder. I couldn't put my finger on why the footage looked so muddy, but sure enough, it was the internal codec. Panasonic's codec is better than most cameras in the price range (bar BlackMagic), but it just can't hold a candle to ProRes.

How much time are we talking here on the delay of 4k 60p recordings?

About 10 seconds. You record a clip. Stop recording and it takes about 10 seconds before you're able to record again. My 1dxii records and stops instantly. Makes me wonder why this one is so slow. I have a 128 GB velocity SD card 1900x. Now that I think about it, it might be the sd card because it writes at 100mbps. I will have to try a Sandisk or Lexar that writes faster. I'll post as soon as try those out. If anyone is already using a very fast SD card that writes over 100mbps, could you please let us know if you have a recording/writing delay when recording in 4k 60p MOV. Thanks.

Huh, my recording start/stops seemed instantaneous playing with it the other day. No different from GH4. I'll pay attention and update if that turns out to be inaccurate.

Only used the GH5 for some 120fps B-Roll but the IBIS may be putting a hurt on the batteries as they seem to last much less time than a GH4 using OIS.

What I've learned today is that the focusing on the Leica 12-60 is a fly by wire piece of **** that changes the amount of refocusing depending on the speed of the pull as opposed to just the distance, making fast reframes/refocus situations complete guesswork. Utterly ridiculous.

Lens quality itself is very nice aside from that. Not sure whether to sell it or not now.

I don't care about AF or similar so would either keep it and deal with it or just use non native manual glass.

Are there better lens choices than the PL 12-60 ? ( i.e. Lumix 12-35 ? )

Fly-by-wire as well. All of Panny lenses are, I think. With time, your muscle memory can learn to adapt even to that though -- but really depends on how shallow is the depth of field and you cannot expect to get your focus rack right every time. Pretty annoying, I know -- still sticking mostly to native lenses just because I need extreme mobility from this camera. Well, the Voigtlanders and SLR Magic primes got normal focus though but out of luck with the zooms.

you cannot expect to get your focus rack right every time.

That appears to be the sad truth and is just completely unacceptable.

I don't want to walk around with a set of native primes for this in addition to my existing ones but as you say, might be the only way. Do the old 16mm cine zooms fit on this slightly larger m43 sensor?

I am recording to 2 SD-cards (256 GB) at the same time in 4k 50 fps mode and there is only a 2-3 second delay after I stop recording.

Some folks post about a 10-second delay when recording to one card... Then I'm 99% sure it is the write-speed of your SD-card which is too blame.

I'm using Sandisk Extreme Pro cards with 95 MB/s writing speed (or 760 mbps). Hope this helps.

It happened to me last night. While taking photos at an event and switching to playback mode the camera froze for about 30s twice in a roll. Felt like a CPU running high and yet to catch up lol since then t hasn't done anything. We are testing to getting them readied for a action sequence shoot this weekend.

I have also tested the 10bit footage on 4 of my computer including a laptop and surface pro 3. They all can be opened in cs6 and cc2015. Can edit and all except obviously switch surface you can't play back smoothly (yes with 8bit in 1/16)

When turning NR to -5, how do you find high ISO performance on the camera?
Still better than the GH4, but I would encourage you to evaluate it set higher before blindly slamming it to -5. It's a different class of NR than I've seen in other cameras, and seems integral to how the GH5 works its magic with the small sensor. (Also, remember that the less noise the codec has to to store, the more bandwidth is available for the actual image.)

Thanks Joe. This is going to be an interesting debate. In the most friendly way, I would love to see you and Paul go head to head on this with footage samples. What you are saying makes a lot of sense, but so does what Paul is saying!

The other big consideration is HOW much better running everything through NeatVideo could be even if that turns out to be better, VS the insane time intensive process that can be.

RE the 2 SD card slots. I really wish they would do a firmware update where two matching cards could be used in a RAID style config to record up to 800mbps/second...

I'll have to do the testing at some point, I agree. For now I'm focused on the LUTs :D

Cheers,

Paul :)
