GH4 GH5 Owner / User Reports

My first test with ETC only bumped up from the 2x crop to 2.49x crop the GH4 has. It's a pretty cool feature with just one touch of the screen.

Cheers, Pete

Nice somone saying the GH4 has a 2.49x crop instead of the 2.3x and the like often quoted,i am awaiting a GH5 and ETC will figure a lot for me with wildlife any quality test information would be nice .

First impressions are that I feel like I have a BMD pocket camera with Canon color science that actually works with no worries and batteries that last forever. Images stabilization is outstanding. Handholding 300mm shots with great success. Panasonic knocked it out of the park with this camera. They will sell so many of them.

Really sets the bar of how compact cameras should be.

+1

Loving how the camera prompts you set the focal length to optimize the Image Stabalization when it detects a dumb lenses. Was worried I'd forget that step when swapping focal lengths. Not sure if that works if the camera isn't shut down during lens swaps, but that's not best practices anyways.

Got mine from 3Dbroadcast Sales in the UK and had zero time to test before I had to use it on an interview.

Screengrab - Shooting Stephen Fry with the Lumix GH5 by Ben Scott, on Flickr

Zeiss Otus 55mm on Speedbooster XL. Straight out of the camera - Cinelike D 4k 150mbs. ISO 250

No heat issues or noise issues. The line input via the xlr adapter was great.

I then had to do some walking shots just holding the camera in my hand with the Leica 12-60mm and IS and while not perfect it yielded more useable shots than I was expecting it to.

EDIT: Click on pic to see it properly - embedding does weird things to the sharpness.

Bold move.

Great grab, & subject matter. Most the actors we film on this side of the pond are...let's just say less distinguished.

Any issues with the SpeedBooster? Have't tested mine yet, & jumping on flight without it, so won't get a chance until next week.

Speed booster perfect with my Otus. Not happy on the Sigma 18-35 at anything other than widest. Would lock up.

My friend has 5 Canon zooms and says none of them work, although until a firmware update there is a multi step workaround.

Do we know when the 400mbs firmware update is coming? I bought the log licence but won't bother with it until there's a bitrate high enough to make use of it.

Here's a few samples of V-Log with the GH5, shot internally at 10bit 4:2:2 at 24p, with my upcoming LUT :)

Frankly I'm blown away by how GOOD V-Log is on the GH5! I'm seeing about two extra stops of dynamic range compared to Cine-D, something which wasn't the case with the GH4. They certainly fixed it!

I've had an instance of what seems to be temporal noise compression ghosting in low light noisy situations, and have submitted a bug report to Panasonic. But in any kind of normal light, it's really great in its response to colour and dynamic range. No doubt 400Mbit/s All-I mode will fix the temporal issues. I just hope it comes sooner rather than later!

More to report once I get my LUTs out! Gotta work on Cine-D now for those who don't have/don't want to use V-Log.

Cheers,

Paul :)

Once this camera has an updated non hassle speedbooster, It will be the camera to beat. (that is unless there already is one?) . Excellent camera. When that 400Mbps comes along, wow!

Same with the MB T-Smart adapter on my Canon 100-400-II - works fin at 100mm, goes haywire at 101mm and above. What's the multi-step workaround your friend found?

Getting a Canon dumb adapter today, which will give me an opportunity to compare the GH5's excellent IBIS to the lens' 4-stop OIS on my GH4.

This is what he sent me, cut and paste from elsewhere

I have found a workaround. Do the following: Attach the speedbooster to the lens, but not to the GH5. Turn on the gh5 without the speedbooster or a lens attached. Then hold the little button thingy on the speedbooster while you attach it to the GH5. Switch the GH5 off while still holding the button. Release the button when the GH5 is fully switched off. Then start it up again. Now the speedbooster is in some sort of special mode where it does work.
Hope this is useful to you. It saved my shoot today :)
