GH5 GH5 IBIS, lenses that don't vignette and work nicely

Just bought the GH5, tried using our sigma 17 - 50 2.8 with the nikon speedbooster and a) IBIS works awfully, b) when moving, panning, the edges of the imaging circle come in the shot. I don't understand why IBIS works so badly with this lens, anybody? Does the body need to communicate with the lens, so that it know at what focal length it is, or else it doesn't work good? Besides that the sigma doesn't vignette, and I'm quite surprised, b/c this is a cropped lens and it doesn't vignette at 1.42 crop.

Setting the sigma aside, what lenses do you guys use that play nicely with IBIS? Lenses that are not native - speedboosted lenses.

Also I was looking at the Olympus 12 - 40 and it looks really nice, but will it work with ibis or will there be visible edges, like on the boosted sigma? I was thinking about the 12 - 40, 40 - 150 combo, and the 12 - 100 for more run n gun situations. I am a bit hesitant to plunge that much money to lenses that are only usable on m4/3, so any canon, nikon lens recommendations would be welcomed. The only downside, if I understand this correctly, is that you need to buy full frame glass (when coupled with SB) in order for IBIS to not vignette?

I have not seen any vignetting on my Canon mount Sigma 18-35mm or Tokina 11-16mm when used with .71x SB Ultra with IBIS turned on. The Olympus lenses will be fine with IBIS if you don't mind native lenses. M4/3 lenses are my workhorse lenses and I really only go to the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 with SB when I have no control over lighting. I use the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8, 35-100mm f/2.8, and Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4 much more often.

That's interesting, a college is using the same sigma 18 - 35 and he's saying it's useless with ibis? My sigma 17 50 doesn't vignette, that would be okay lol, whole corners of the image circle come in the frame! :)

How do you know the Oly's are okay? Have you tested them?

Are you using a XL, or Ultra, SpeedBooster? The XL is much more prone to vignette on the GH5, especially with APC lenses.

Also note that if you choose Olympus’ zoom lenses over LUMIX’s you’ll be limited to IBIS, & won’t have access to Dual IS, or Dual IS 2.

Uh I didn't realize that there were two nikon SB :) We have the 0.71 version.

I do realise that with Oly lenses dual is is not an option but I hate panasonic lenses. For such a video centric camera there are surprisingly no good video lenses options.

I'm really hesitant buying FF glass for m43 as a) the glass is more expensive and b) lenses are less wide at same f stop. 17 50 2.8 makes a lot more sense on s35 than 24 - 70 does for instance. Oly lenses look really nice for video but don't know how well ibis works. In fact I am quite confused about the usability of ibis. I see lots of warping and jerking of the image when using ibis...

Since the Nikon Metnbones speedbooster is totally "dumb", the IBIS has no idea of the focal length to calibrate the IS to. Don't you see the dialog that comes up on the screen asking for focal length setting when IBIS is on? For any effective IBIS you have to enter a good approximation of the booster-reduced FL of ~12-35mm for the IBIS to function properly. Which would be a real pain in a R&G setting. I've got a surprisingly good old 28-210mm Vivitar in Nikon mount that's pretty much useless off sticks unless you re-enter FL with significant changes.

OTOH, with Canon lenses the SB has full electronic communication: aperture setting (with correct new aperture), S-AF, lens OIS if present, and corrected focal length for IBIS. My Canon 100-400-II works flawlessly with a straight Metabones T-Smart adapter - using either the excellent 4-stop OIS or IBIS, with IS-Lock working with either option.

Thanks mate, that's what I needed to hear. So ibis needs focal length info to function. Yeah, sure, I saw the dialogue at startup, but that's just one focal length, as you've said, changing it for every single change of the zoom ring would be completely unworkable. Tbh I just went and bought the camera, I am just now learning about it :) This is not usually how I handle gear, but I just didn't have time to do any research as I am bizzy af atm.

Sooo long story short, the nikon adapter wont work with ibis for me, as the GH5 setup we have is a docu, run n gun setup, so no way we are changing the mm setting for ibis all the time.

Still confused about the warping and jittery stuff I've seen from ibis... Also confused how some people report some lenses to be usable while others report the same lens unusable. Could there be something different in the settings? Does the gh5 ask you to input the focal length at start up when you use an EF SB adapter?

You need to use a zoom lens that can communicate with the camera IBIS system to let it know exactly what focal-length you are shooting with as you zoom. This means that you either shoot with native m4/3 electronic lenses or Canon EF zooms that function correctly with an electronic m4/3 adapter.

The vignetting comes from using some APS-C lenses with a SpeedBooster, where the SpeedBoosted image circle is too small for the IBIS system. ( FF lenses won't have this problem )

IBIS can only do so much, if you ask too much of it there will be warping/jitter. This is why I ended up going the Panasonic lens route because the Dual IS can be pushed more than IBIS alone. I previously used the Olympus 12-40mm but the IBIS wasn't cutting it for me .

Your speedbooster isn't cropping the lens enough. The .71's won't work well with APSC lenses, only full frame. You just need to get the .64 speedboosters, which work with APSC lenses.

Otherwise I love using 5 axis stabilization combined with e-stabilization on all my non electronic and vintage lenses. Handheld you can't go much over 35mm at least not for long clips. I used a vintage 128mm lens with the internal stabilization for some short clips though with great results. With a cheap shoulder rig I can shoot well with 50mm lenses too.

You have that backwards- for APS-C lenses you want the .71x booster, for full-frame lenses you want the .64x booster.

Afraid you've got this backwards! The OP has a crop lens which doesn't vignette on his GH5 with a 0.71 Speedbooster, but probably would with the 0.64X. I don't thinking he was complaining about the lack of vignetting - just an observation. The 0.64X SB's are designed to be used w/ FF lenses, unless for some weird reason you want hardware generated vignetting w/ crop lens on your GH5's full sensor video readout.

I understand that yes. That's why Im asking which apsc lenses work (if any) with a SB and ibis... The Sigma 17 50 2.8 draws a rather big image circle for a cropped lens. The biggest of the apsc standard zoom bunch I think. It doesn't vignette at all, it's only unusable with ibis as whole corners come into the shot.

Please do tell about your experience with the 12 40 and gh5! How did the ibis perform, when did it fail you and when was it adaquate? Did it vignette when using ibis? We are using it with a properly ballanced shoulder rig, would it be good for such a use? No plan on using just from the hands.

Tbh 0.64 still leaves the lens not wide enough... There aren't really any standard zooms made for a 1.28 crop. They either fall short on the wide end (24-70) or on the long end (16-35) and have an f4 max stop. So it doesn't make much sense to use FF glass on such a crop IMO. The Oly zooms a perfect zooms for a 2x crop... it's just a shame they don't have ois and if they do they don't support dual is with gh5.

I did not have a shoulder rig, just handheld, but walking shots showed warping/jitter. It worked fine for static shots without much movement. No vignette with IBIS. The Olympus did render very pleasing colors, but it would not AF at 40mm and the focusing ring is overly sensitive for manual focusing in my opinion.

How about pans and tilts?

The only problem is with Nikon-mount lenses, which work great as primes w/ IBIS as long as you input the BOOSTED FL correctly on startup. Neglect this - here come the jitters! Zooms - you need to be a math savant with the patience of Job!

OTOH with Canon lenses - using either the MB Speedboosters or non-optical Smart T adapters - work transparently with IBIS, S-AF, aperture contol on camera, and OIS if present, w/ option to use it or IBIS. And with the SB's, the new boosted aperture and FL appear in-camera and EXIF info. And no IBIS FL dialog on startup for zoom or fixed.

Pans and tilts were fine most of the time as long as you don't start and stop abruptly.

Aha okey. Thanks, this info is much appreciated!

On a side note, I just tried setting the correct focal setting on the gh and IBIS worked! without any vignetting or jittering on the Sigma 17-50! Nice! But it is a pain, I've set a shortcut for it on FN1, but still, it's a pain to change the setting. It's even a bigger pain, as you have to calculate the focal length by multiplying it with 0.71 !

So, any experience you guys would like to share regarding which lenses work well with ibis?:)
