GH4 GH5: Hidden benefit

Others may know this already but I just rented a GH5 for a shoot this weekend and noted a benefit I haven't seen discussed: The camera no longer splits shoots into smaller files. I filmed a 1 hour scene and the camera generated a single file! This is a very large benefit to me for many reasons, including file management, color grading, etc.

Anyway, in case anyone didn't know this yet...

It will split files at 4GB increments if recording to an SDHC card. You can avoid that (well, much of it) by recording to SDXC cards.

SDHC cards use FAT32, with a 4GB file size limit. SDXC cards use ExFAT, with a 2TB file size limit. There is probably some limit imposed by the camera (meaning, at some file size it will still split). In the DVX200 it's 48GB, in the UX180/UX90 it's 96GB. I don't know what the internal memory limit in the GH5 would be. There's a limit, I'm sure, but it's probably a pretty big number.

Thanks Barry. The largest file I've recorded so far is 62GB so it's at least that large.

File limit is 96G for mp4( LPCM ) and mov. It will still carry on recording in a new file though. For AVCHD and mp4 it is 4G just as if the formatting is FAT32 even on an exFAT SDXC card. Page 33 in manual.
