GH4 GH5 Final Results of Max Yuryev and PhotoJoesephs cooperative autofocus tests

As you may know Max Yuryev posted an infamous video saying GH5 AF was unusable. Photojoseph posted a counter video saying no it wasn't. So they agreed to meet in person and do AF testing.

Joes is shorter and more to the point Max's shows more details of the testing. Both conclusion sections are both of them discussion results together.


Max is now taking back some of his famous criticisms of auto-focus. He now says "it was performing impressively well", although it still needs improvement. And PhotoJoeseph now admits it could be working better. So in their own words they "met in the middle".

Interesting that a) custom OFF works best b) setting specific focus areas helps c) face detection is good to use

I think Ken7 pointed this out right at the beginning. When I got my GH5 a week ago it didn't take me long to figure this out either. Just because there are fancy custom controls doesn't mean they are of practical use. Defaults are often the best !!! Yet most of the internet testers didn't even test with Custom AF OFF. In my eyes the AF is as good as my camcorders and has the advantage of being able to specify the area to be focused.
