GH4 GH5 Audio questions

So anyone who can test it or anyone with a link to someone already talking about it... please share.

I was wondering if the GH5 has the audio flutter that the GH4 does.

And more importantly if the XLR breakoutbox has a shoemount-cable (like the sony alternative does) so I
dont have to put the whole thing on top and can mount it elsewhere?

Can't answer your first question but I did watch a video recently where somebody from Panasonic stated that no there is no official product to attach the XLR audio adapter with a cable. They did say however in theory if you bought a cable with the exact same pin configuration it "might" work. There will likely not be an official word on this from Panasonic so you will have to wait for somebody to spend the cash to try it themselves.

The Gh5 uses an extra pin compared to previous cameras so the cable will likely have to be fairly special and new to support the exact same pins.

The person from Panasonic did mention if you try it you have to be very careful that the cable isn't too long since the signal might weaken over a longer cable run. The device was really optimized and designed for a direct connection. To use it otherwise really is at your own risk and Panasonic will never be held responsible for any audio issues from hacking a flash cable to work this way.

My honest professional opinion is don't do it. Now if hundreds of people do it with 100% perfect results and there are tutorials online on how to do then you can take a chance but again Panasonic can and never will be responsible if you run into any issues. You may even void the warranty of the audio device by doing so.

Not sure what you mean by GH4 "audio flutter" ?

There was the "motor-boat" noise problem when the GH4 was first released, that was fixed about 2 months later on the manufacturing line.
( you could return your GH4 to Panasonic for a hardware fix, or you could wait like I did to get a factory fixed camera a couple months later )

Even then it was only with certain mics. Never experienced it myself.

With the first release of GH4 cameras the horrible "motor-boat" noise was noticeable as you approached maximum audio gain. ( which is a pretty bad idea with any low-cost preamp because they are all noisy when they reach their gain limits )

Not with my GH4/AT-8024 shotgun/stereo mic. But my default camera gain is -12dB, or as low as I can get away with it otherwise.

STEVE =- thanks for this link... perfect.

I was just wondering because I like when a cage uses the hotshoe as a connection point .

And yes, I mean the motor-boat noise. I seem to remember someone who sent their in for repair and it came back with a higher noise floor, so I never did. I just keep it at -12 and any ambient noise covers it.

Yes but anybody that does this does so at their own risk. Panasonic will not support this. Anybody who tries it needs to keep in mind there could be latency or other power issues related to using a longer cable with a device that was designed for a direct connection. Passing 24bit 96khz uncompressed audio and phantom power over a cable is a lot different than passing camera controls. Just because a cable has the same physical layout doesn't mean it has the same bandwidth. Think USB2 vs USB3 as an example.

People are welcome to try it of course but just don't expect Panasonic to offer any support for such an action. I wonder if it would even void the warranty for the audio device since Panasonic cannot be sure if a bad cable could cause a power surge. After paying that much for a camera I wouldn't want to start hacking around with it. Then again I doubt I would buy the audio unit anyway and if I did I would likely look towards a new cage designed to work around the audio adapter.
