GH5 Gh5 2.1 firmware update; film in VLOG or HLG

It's basically got the same noise characteristic as V-LogL, but I find it more pleasant because there's more tonal precision between adjacent tones, meaning the noise is smoother.

Cheers,

Paul :)

Hi Paul,

I'm testing out your HLG-LUT at the moment, but I think I am doing something wrong. I have FCPX with the LUT Utility plugin installed, which works fine. My footage is GH5 4K 25p 10 bit 150 Mbit, HLG profile, settings as described in your PDF. Importing the footage in FCP colors and skintones are very nice, but the colorspace is REC 2020. It is easy to change the space to REC 709, then the colors and skintones look pale, but the dynamic range stays the same (it looks as if). Applying your HLG Lut 501 Colors are nice and rich, skin looks beautiful, but it looks as if i loose lots of detail in the highlights - what is wrong with my workflow?

Thanx! Martin

Hi Martin :)

You seem to be doing it mostly right as far as I can tell. You've changed the colour space to Rec709, then applied my LUT, which fixes the colours and curve and should make everything work fine.

As Shirozina says, you may be missing the data levels vs video levels, causing the highlights and shadows to clip. I've seen this with a couple of other people's FCPX footage.

I don't have FCPX as I'm Windows based, but there shuld be a way to alter levels to force FULL data levels instead of video levels. Jump into the Facebook group for my LUT and someone will be able to help you with that last part I'm sure :)

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Paul :)

Hi Paul and Shirozina,
thank you for your replys, I will join the Facebook group and try it this way. I will report when I find a solution. Maybe it makes sense to complement your Installation Manual PDF with the solution.
Best, Martin

Basically HLG is not designed for grading. It's a co-development between NHK in Japan and the BBC in England for live transmission and display. With any form of LOG, Panasonic, Canon, Sony etc you have the full LOG gamma available to manipulate and create basically any type of output you require. I know it relates to Sony in this instance but rather than over complicating the subject it's worth watching Alistair Chapman's HLG and HDR videos for a much fuller explanation than is possible within the bounds of a forum post. The two are by nature co-related

I don't think of HLG as its own thing on the GH5, but rather simply as a container/curve format which gives the same DR as V-LogL, but using much more of the tonal range.

Once you think of it like that, it becomes just another profile option (in this case, the best DR/tone response option) to adjust into accurate Rec709 colorimetry :)

Cheers,

Paul :)

Thanks guys. I'm as confused as ever about HLG. I shot everything in V-LogL for a while, but had trouble with 8 bit files. They just didn't grade well with V-Log. Since I do a fair amount of outdoor action, I wanted to use 4k 60p, but it's 8 bit, and am about to try using natural instead with adjustments to contrast, saturation and NR. Did some research and can't remember what I settled on but programmed it into my custom settings. We'll see what happens. I had planned to try HLG, but now I'm not sure. I want to be able to grade, so I might shoot 24p in V-LogL, and 4k 60p 8 bit and 180fps 1080p in natural, or I might shoot those last two in HLG. I wonder if 8 bit HLG will grade better than 8 bit natural or V-Log. I have started working in rec2020 on a new iMac 5k, and output to HDR as a test for an episode of a show I'm producing, but I haven't tested on an HDR TV yet. I'm going to have to do some more testing so I can focus on shooting and put this internal debate in my head to bed.

If you can't shoot in 10bit then stay away from HLG and V-LOG - get the look you want in camera from one of the other profiles and not in grading.
