geek question I probably won't even understand the answer for:

Is the 4k video coming out of the GH4, the new standard rec.2020 or same old rec.709 color space?

I ask because 4k is slated for rec.2020, but I don't know where the difference tween that an 709 is found. Does editing software have rec.2020 in it yet?

rec 2020 is very new and utopistic future codec definition. I think that no camera or TV uses it already.

GH4 uses old rec709 which means usually in practise that luminance levels (light levels) are recorded 16-235 in 8 bit space. GH4 lets you record also 0-255 luminance scale so you get more room for shades and there is less banding.

so 0-255 is NOT really part of 2020? kind of a different thing? I understand the color space is wider... I thought new 4k TVs were rec.2020 capable?

Canon this month is upgrading the C500 to rec.2020. I saw it at IBC into their 4k rec.2020 monitor. Amazing color

Do some studying with google if you want to know more. All the information is there. If I remember right rec2020 contains 4k 60P or even 120P and less compressed colors like 4:4:4. Common 4k TVs can show only 30P.

Maybe I could advance this discussion... any reason why we could not expand GH4 footage out to fit rec.2020 when it becomes more mainstream? We can adjust contrast/colors past rec.709 (pointlessly) now, so why not expand our edit to meet 2020?
